TEMPE, Ariz.- The Arizona State women's basketball team (2-0 overall) defeated Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (0-2 overall) 84-68 in its second game of the season Monday night at Wells Fargo Arena.
Senior forward Kristine Sand hit 10-of-15 field goals and scored a game-high 24 points. Sand also registered a team-high six rebounds, as did senior guard Kitch Kitchen. Freshman Sarah Allen and sophomore Theresa Jantzen also put up double digits in points as Jantzen contributed 14, while Allen added 10. Jantzen was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Kitchen and junior guard Natalie Tucker led the team with six assists apiece, while senior center Rachel Holt notched a career-high four blocks.
ASU started the game slow, and Cal Poly held an early 6-4 lead four minutes into the game. Then Sand entered the game, sparking an 18-2 Sun Devil run with 10 straight points. ASU built on its run, taking a 16-point lead (38-22) into the locker room at the half. In the second half, the Sun Devils extended their lead to as many as 23 points, shooting 54 percent from the field.
Cal Poly forward Jill Hodges led the Mustangs with 20 points and seven rebounds. Guard Odessa Jenkins added eight points. Sherilyn Frazier had six rebounds and guard Kristy Baker led Cal Poly with four assists and two steals.
ASU heads to North Carolina to take on Wake Forest Friday night at 7 p.m. and No. 8 North Carolina Sunday at 2 p.m. The games will be broadcast live by the Sun Devil Sports Network on KTKP 1280 AM.
