TEMPE, Ariz.- The Arizona State women's basketball team defeated UC Irvine 78-62 in its 1999-2000 regular-season opener Friday night at Wells Fargo Arena.

Sophomore forward Theresa Jantzen led the Sun Devils with the fifth double-double of her young career, registering 25 points and 10 rebounds. Jantzen hit 9-of12 field goals and knocked down all seven of her free throw attempts. Senior guard Kitch Kitchen scored a career-high 18 points, and senior center Rachel Holt contributed 15. Junior guard Natalie Tucker led the team with five assists.

ASU built a 35-29 lead in the first half, shooting 46 percent from the field. In the second half, the Sun Devils extended their lead to as many as 18 points, capitalizing on a 28-15 rebounding advantage. ASU finished the game outrebounding UC Irvine 47-31.

UC Irvine guard Megan Stafford led the Anteaters with 20 points, while forward Kirsten Cappel notched 12. Kirsten Cappel, Chelsea Mackey and Cindy Oparah all tallied five rebounds, while Stafford led the team with seven assists.

ASU returns to action Monday, Nov. 22 against Cal Poly Monday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena.
