Arizona State University used a school record vault score of 49.65, a school record floor score of 49.825 and a near school record of 49.5 on uneven bars to defeat No. 11 ranked University of Arizona, 197.7-196.225, in front of 1,151 fans at Wells Fargo Arena Friday. The Sun Devils posted 17 career or season-highs on the evening, en route to posting the fifth-best team score in history (197.7). The crowd was the 10th-largest in ASU gymnastics history.
Sun Devil sophomore Ashley Kelly won the all-around with a school record score of 39.875. She tied her own school mark of 39.875 set last year versus Kentucky. Kelly won the seventh all-around title of her brilliant career. Teammate Maggie Germaine was second (39.65 season-high) while Monica Bisordi of Arizona was third (39.6). .
On vault, ASU tied a school record score of 49.65, set last year versus Kentucky on March 21 at Wells Fargo Arena. The Sun Devils posted two perfect 10.0's, led by sophomore Kelly's third 10.0 of her career and second on vault. Freshman Cassandra Jusino also chipped in with a 10.0, the first of her career. UA's andi McCabe was third (9.95). Seniors Germaine and Carla DeMartini each posted 9.9, which tied for fourth-place with Wildcats Abby Pearson and Bisordi. Sun Devil freshman April Boone set a career-high with a 9.85 while senior Jada Cox tied a season-high with a 9.825. Arizona's vault score of 48.825 was a season-low.
Kelly, ASU's Kari Muth and UA's Jamie Duce tied for first-place on the uneven bars, scoring 9.925's. Germaine, DeMartini and Wildcat Bisordi were tied for fourth-place (9.9). The Sun Devils' bars score of 49.5 was .025 off the school record of 49.525 set earlier this year versus Oregon State (2/6). The Wildcats scored a 48.775 on the discipline.
On the balance beam, ASU was forced to count a fall as both Jusino (9.2) and Cox (9.25) suffered falls. Kelly won the beam with a 9.95. Sheehan Lemley and McCabe of UA were tied for second (9.9). Germaine and Bisordi were tied for fifth with a 9.85 while. Senior Amber Giorgianni of ASU scored a season-high 9.875 on beam, placing fourth.
Kelly scored the second 10.0 of her performance (third for ASU), tying for first on the floor exercise with teammate Germaine. It was Germaine's second straight 10 on floor (last Friday in the UNO's Classic) and the fifth of her career on floor. Katie Johnson of UA scored a 9.975 and took third. Muth (career-high), Cox (career-high) and Bisordi (9.95) were tied for fourth-place. ASU sophomore Lauren Powell posted a career-high 9.925, placing seventh. The 49.825 on floor was a school record, breaking the previous mark of 49.725 set versus Kentucky (3/21/03). UA's floor score of 49.375 was the 10th-best in school history. DeMartini, a late replacement for Jusino, scored a season-high 9.875 on floor.
The Sun Devils are in action again this Sunday, February 29 at 2 p.m. CT, competing in the Master's Classic in Lincoln, Nebraska. Competing in the event are ASU, host No. 7 Nebraska, No. 5 Florida and Illinois.
