Welcome to Mountain America Stadium, the proud home of Sun Devil Football!

Located on the campus of Arizona State University, Mountain America Stadium (formerly known as Sun Devil Stadium) is one the of the most aesthetic, dynamic, innovative and beautiful collegiate stadiums in the nation. 

Home of the ASU Sun Devils, it has hosted some of the most legendary players and been the setting of unforgettable games and events for more than four decades. 

The stadium also annually hosts Pat's Run which benefits the Pat Tillman Foundation, as more than 35,000 take part in the April tradition.

Stadium details

The original stadium was constructed between two small mountains and was completed in time for the start of the 1958 season. It was named after the team and had a seating capacity of 30,000 when it opened on Oct. 4, 1958. 

Beginning in 1976, the capacity was increased to more than 57,000. The following year the capacity increased to 70,000+ when the upper deck was completed.

In 1987, the NFL's St. Louis Cardinals moved to Arizona and Mountain America Stadium and continued to play their home games there until moving to the University of Phoenix Stadium in 2005.

After turning 50 in 2008, a three-phase project was completed on Mountain America Stadium in 2018, settling its current capacity at 53,599.

Game Day general admission lots, including structures, are $20 per vehicle, and is available in:

Non-approved Game Day golf carts are prohibited in and around Mountain America Stadium and in the surrounding parking lots.

Sun Devil parking passes

Pass holder parking lots open seven hours prior to kickoff. 

A Sun Devil parking pass is required to park in the following lots:

  • Stadium Structure 5
  • South Packard Drive Structure 7
  • Whiteman Tennis Reserved

Stadium history

Mountain America Stadium is an iconic venue with a rich history that spans several decades. Originally opened in 1958 as Sun Devil Stadium, it has served as the home of Arizona State University’s football team, the Sun Devils, for many years. Over the decades, the stadium has hosted numerous significant events, including college football games, bowl games, concerts, and large-scale sporting events.

Sun Devil Stadium opens, Oct 4. 1958, with a 16-13 ASU victory over West Texas State.

Sun Devil Football begins their streak of nine consecutive Territorial Cup® victories with a 14-6 win over Arizona.

Sun Devil Stadium hosted the Fiesta Bowl from 1971 to 2006, and the inaugural 1971 Fiesta Bowl is considered by many to be one of the most thrilling bowl games of the 1970s. The game hosted 51,098 fans who saw a combined 83 points, setting a record for the highest total in a major bowl game at the time.

The stadium has hosted some big names in music business over the years, including U2 (three times), Rolling Stones (twice), The Who, Paul McCartney, Eagles, George Strait, Rage Against the Machine, Third Eye Blind, among others have each performed at the legendary stadium. In 2021, superstar Jack Harlow performed in front of first-year students at InfernoFest, part of the annual Sun Devil Welcome.

football11988 - Seating expansion

The 1988 expansion added nearly 1,700 seats to complete the oval of the stadium, along with a state-of-the-art scoreboard and a four-color video replay board. Also added was the Intercollegiate Athletic Complex, now named the Nadine and Ed Carson Student-Athlete Center, which houses the entire realm of the ASU athletic department.

Sun Devil Stadium hosts Super Bowl XXX. The Cowboys defeated the Steelers 27-17 in front of 76,347 fans. Diana Ross hosted the halftime show.

19960921 19-01996 - Frank Kush Field

The field within Sun Devil Stadium was named Frank Kush Field on Sept. 21, 1996. In one of the greatest nights in college football history, the game marked the first time since 1977 that a top-ranked team was shutout as ASU defeated Nebraska 19-0. The win enhanced a magical night as Coach Kush was honored and hundreds of his former players were in attendance.

Sun Devil Stadium hosts the inaugural BCS Championship game with a stadium record crowd of 80,470.

20050416 PatsRun_0892005 - The beginnings of Pat’s Run

Pat's Run is a 4.2-mile run that honors Pat Tillman, a former NFL and Arizona State University football player who died in Afghanistan in 2004. The race is the signature fundraiser for the Pat Tillman Foundation, which provides scholarships to military veterans and their spouses. The inaugural Pat’s Run in 2005 sees more than 5,500 participants complete the 4.2 mile run/walk by crossing the 42-yard line in Sun Devil Stadium.

In May 2009, President Barack Obama visited ASU to deliver a commencement speech at the university's graduation ceremony. President Obama spoke to more than 8,000 graduates, their families, and university staf.
