About Mountain America Stadium

Located on the campus of Arizona State University, Mountain America Stadium (formerly known as Sun Devil Stadium) is one the of the most aesthetic, dynamic, innovative and beautiful collegiate stadiums in the nation. 

Home of the ASU Sun Devils, it has played host to some of the best football games and legends for more than four decades, as well as notable musical entertainers. It annually hosts Pat's Run that benefits the Pat Tillman Foundation, as more than 35,000 take part in the April tradition.

Stadium details

The original stadium was constructed between two small mountains and was completed in time for the start of the 1958 season. It was named after the team and had a seating capacity of 30,000 when it opened on Oct. 4, 1958. 

Beginning in 1976, the capacity was increased to more than 57,000. The following year the capacity increased to 70,000+ when the upper deck was completed. In 1987, the NFL's St. Louis Cardinals moved to Arizona and Mountain America Stadium and continued to play their home games there until moving to the University of Phoenix Stadium in 2005. After turning 50 in 2008, a three-phase project was completed on Mountain America Stadium in 2018, settling its current capacity at 53,599.

Game Day general admission lots, including structures, are $20 per vehicle.

Non-approved Game Day golf carts are prohibited in and around Mountain America Stadium and in the surrounding parking lots.

Sun Devil Parking Pass parking

Pass holder parking lots open 7 hours prior to kickoff. 

A Sun Devil Parking Pass is required to park in the following lots:

  • Whiteman Tennis Reserved
  • Reserved North 
  • Reserved South

The Tempe Streetcar serves Mountain America Stadium from the Marina Heights stop on the north side of the stadium. 

Orbit Shuttle

The City of Tempe's Orbit shuttle is a free service that travels around the perimeter of ASU's Tempe Campus with multiple stops along University Dr.

Rideshare services
For visitors using rideshare services like Uber or Lyft to access Mountain America Stadium, designated drop-off and pick-up zones are available:

  • Near the South Packard Drive Structure (Structure 7)
  • In Lot 10, situated at the northeast corner of Rio Salado Parkway and Packard Drive 
  • In Lot 50, accessible via Veterans Way and 6th Street

Designated Driver Program

Designed to allow guests to have a safe and enjoyable time at Sun Devil Football games, the Designated Driver Program promotes responsible consumption of alcoholic beverages and having a way to get home safely after the game. Guests wishing to participate will scan the QR code found throughout the stadium near concession stands.

Mountain America Stadium is an iconic venue with a rich history that spans several decades. Originally opened in 1958 as Sun Devil Stadium, it has served as the home of Arizona State University’s football team, the Sun Devils, for many years. Over the decades, the stadium has hosted numerous significant events, including college football games, bowl games, concerts, and large-scale sporting events.

After relocating from St. Louis in the 1988 season, Sun Devil Stadium became home to both the Sun Devils and the NFL’s Phoenix Cardinals, later renamed the Arizona Cardinals in 1994. The Cardinals resided in Sun Devil Stadium until 2006 when they moved to Glendale’s University of Phoenix Stadium.

The expansion of 1988, which added a large seating section that completed the oval of the stadium, added almost 1,700 seats to the stadium's capacity. Also added was the Intercollegiate Athletic Complex at the structure's south end, which is now named the Nadine and Ed Carson Student Athlete Center. The building houses the entire realm of the ASU athletic department. A state-of-the-art scoreboard and four-color video replay board were also added.

Sun Devil Stadium hosts Super Bowl XXX. The Cowboys defeated the Steelers 27-17 in front of 76,347 fans. Diana Ross hosted the halftime show.

The field within Sun Devil Stadium was named Frank Kush Field on Sept. 21, 1996. In one of the greatest nights in college football history, the game marked the first time since 1977 that a top-ranked team was shutout as ASU defeated Nebraska 19-0. The win enhanced a magical night as Coach Kush was honored and hundreds of his former players were in attendance.

Pat's Run is a 4.2-mile run/walk that honors Pat Tillman, a former NFL and Arizona State University football player who died in Afghanistan in 2004. The race is the signature fundraiser for the Pat Tillman Foundation, which provides scholarships to military veterans and their spouses. The inaugural Pat’s Run in 2005 sees more than 5,500 participants complete the 4.2 mile run/walk by crossing the 42-yard line in Sun Devil Stadium.
