Baseball Places Six On Pac-12 All-Academic Teams

The Sun Devil Way: Baseball's Rossiter fulfills a lifelong dream | 21 Baseball Student-Athletes Earn Spring 2013 Academic Recognition

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Six Arizona State University baseball student-athletes have earned Pac-12 All-Academic recognition, the conference announced Friday.

Right-handed pitcher Josh McAlister, a junior accounting major, was selected to the first team with a 3.69 cumulative GPA in Barrett, The Honors College.

Kasey Coffman, Darin Gillies, Zak Miller, Max Rossiter and Billy Young each earned honorable mention recognition. Miller, Rossiter and Young all graduated this past spring.

This is the second Pac-12 All-Academic selection for both Coffman and Rossiter, who were also honorable mention recipients in 2012.

Miller, a redshirt junior right-handed pitcher from Surrey, British Columbia, graduated this past spring with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and a 3.38 GPA.

Rossiter, a senior catcher from Gilbert, Ariz., graduated this past spring with a Bachelor of Arts in Business (Public Service and Public Policy) and a 3.31 GPA.

Gillies, a sophomore right-handed pitcher from Hollister, Calif., has a 3.16 cumulative GPA and is a Criminal Justice major.

Young, a junior right-handed pitcher from Show Low, Ariz., graduated this past spring with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications major and a 3.13 GPA.

Coffman, a junior outfielder from Phoenix, Ariz., is a Justice Studies major with a minor in Sociology and has a 3.10 cumulative GPA

This is the 17th consecutive season that Arizona State has had at least two members on conference All-Academic Teams.

Head coach Tim Esmay has had 20 Pac-12 All-Academic recipients in his four seasons at the helm in Tempe, including six in 2013, five in 2012, six in 2011 and three in 2010.

To be eligible for selection to the academic teams, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall GPA, be a significant contributor to the team and have a minimum of one year of enrollment at the institution.

The baseball program had 21 student-athletes earn Scholar Baller® recognition during the spring semester, which honors those who achieved a 3.0 GPA or made outstanding academic improvement.

Fifteen Sun Devils earned Scholar Baller® recognition in both semesters of the 2012-13 school year while a total of 26 baseball student-athletes were Scholar Ballers® for at least one semester.

Six Sun Devil baseball players, including five on the current team and current Red Sox minor leaguer Deven Marrero, earned their degrees in 2013. A total of nine Sun Devils have graduated in the 2012-13 school year, including four after their collegiate playing days were over.
