TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State men's and women's swimming team capped a successful run at the Texas Invitational on Sunday with a victory and two NCAA Championship-qualifying performances. The Sun Devils tallied a collective four wins and five automatic births in the national championships during the three-day meet in Austin, Texas.
Among the NCAA qualifiers was sophomore Riley Mants by virtue of her second-place showing in the women's 200-meter breaststroke (2:28.76). Fellow sophomore Sarah Baham, who won Friday's 100-meter butterfly, assured herself of a spot at the NCAA's by placing fourth in a very fast heat of the 200 fly (2:13.12). In women's platform diving, ASU senior Katrina Pfeuffer placed third with 417.85 points, followed closely by junior teammate Trish Malatesta (416.55).
On the men's side, Arizona State's 400 freestyle relay team of Anders Lyrbring, Scott VonSchoff, Bo West and Simon MacDonald touched the wall first in 3:16.55. VonSchoff recorded the Devils' highest individual finish of the day with a third place, 49.00 showing in the 100 free, while junior Adam Guzauskas followed up his victory in the 100 breaststroke with a fourth place finish in 200 breast competition (2:15.39). All of the aforementioned men's times will garner NCAA Championship consideration.
ASU returns to action Dec. 18 when it hosts Pac-10 foe Washington in a dual meet at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
