#6 Softball Falls at #3 Arizona

May 3, 2006

TUCSON, Ariz. - Backed by Alicia Hollowell's two-hit outing and Arizona's red-hot offense, the #3 Arizona Wildcats topped the #6 Arizona State Sun Devils 10-0 Wednesday night in Tucson. The Sun Devils now stand at 42-10 overall and 6-7 in conference play as the `Cats improve to 37-9 and 8-6.

The Wildcats took the lead in the first with a solo shot over left from Kristie Fox to go up 1-0 before coming out in the second to rattle off four runs off of four hits as UA took a 5-0 lead after two and tabbed on another run in the third to give the `Cats a 6-0 cushion over ASU.

The Sun Devils threatened the `Cats in the fifth as they loaded the bases with a lead-off walk to Michelle Smith followed with a single from pinch-hitter Jessica Mapes and with runners on the corners and two outs, Kaitlin Cochran was intentionally walked to load the bases before Jackie Vasquez flied out to center field to end the inning.

With the `Cats leading 6-0 in the sixth inning UA loaded up the bases with two singles and a Sun Devil error when Callista Balko stepped to the plate to crush a grand slam to left field to end the game 10-0 in favor of the `Cats.

The Sun Devils will look to retaliate this weekend as they return to Farrington Stadium for a homestand against the #8 Stanford Cardinal and #7 Cal Bears. Friday night's game against Stanford is set to kick off at 7 p.m. in Tempe.
