The Season -- Arizona State's gymnastics team put the finishing touches on a record-breaking season at the 2003 NCAA Championships in Lincoln, Nebraska, finishig ninth nationally. The Sun Devils, under legendary 23rd-year coach John Spini set numerous records in '03, including shattering most of ASU's event records, total team scores and individual performance marks. Spini and his coaching staff put ASU back on the national gymnastics map after missing qualifying for the championships in 2002. Plus, most of the 2003 squad returns in 2004, including the addition of three top recruits.
ASU In The Rankings -- Arizona State debuted at No. 15 in the GymInfo rankings, based on the preseason coaches poll released Jan. 2. ASU climbed as high as No. 2 (two weeks) and was ranked third for five weeks. Pac-10 Conference foe UCLA was selected to win the crown with 752 votes and 20 first-place bids. ASU received 333 votes and was neighbored in the standings by No. 7 Stanford (570), No. 10 Arizona (444) and No. 13 Oregon State (355). Washington (17th, 268) rounded out the list of Pac-10 teams in the top-25. For info access http://www.troester.com/gym/. Heading into nationals, ASU ranked 2nd on beam (49.495 avg.) as well as 4th on floor (49.485 avg.). The Sun Devils were T-8th on bars (49.320 avg.) and 6th on vault (49.365 avg.). Maggie Germaine was 8th nationally in the all-around (39.575 avg.) while Ashley Kelly was 10th (39.550). Germaine was 2nd on floor (9.975 avg.) while Ashley Kelly was 7th on beam (9.940) and Ashley Ellsberry was 4th (9.950). Kelly was 7th on bars (9.930).
Meet Highlights From 2003 -- ASU At NCAA Northeast Regionals (4/12/03): ASU placed second and advanced to the NCAA's. Ashley Kelly was third in the all-around (39.450), winning the bars (9.9) and beam (9.925). Carla DeMartini (9.825) was fourth on vault. ASU At Pac-10 Championships (3/29/03): ASU recorded its highest finish (3rd) in the Pac-10 Championships since 1999. ASU scored a 197.075 (8th-best team score in '03). Ashley Kelly tied for 7th on bars (9.9) and Maggie Germaine tied for 3rd on floor (9.975). Kelly and Ashley Ellsberry tied for 4th on beam (9.925). ASU-Kentucky (3/21/03): ASU set the school record 198.275 team score in beating the Wildcats. Ashley Kelly scored the first two perfect 10's of her career (vault, bars) and recorded the school record all-around mark of 39.875, the highest AA score in the nation. ASU set a team record on vault (49.650), on bars (49.500) and on floor (49.725). ASU-San Jose State (3/14/03): ASU had a subpar meet but still scored a 197.300, its season average. Maggie Germaine scored her 4th perfect 10.0 of the year, this time on floor. She won the all-around (39.550). ASU's vault score (49.500) was its 2nd-highest all year. Kari Muth had a career-high on floor (9.950) and bars (9.925). ASU-Boise State (3/7/03): Aided by three 10.0s by Maggie Germaine (vault/floor) and Cassidy Vreeke (floor), ASU posted its 6th-best team score in history, a 197.400 in beating BSU. ASU set a school record (vault, 49.6) while floor (49.65) was the 2nd-best ever. ASU-California/Rutgers (2/28/03): ASU posted the third-highest team score in history, a 197.825 and defeated No. 25 California and Rutgers. It was the second-best team score this year. ASU posted its best vault score (49.475) and floor score (49.675, school record) of the year. Ashley Kelly won the all-around with a career-high score of 39.750. Kelly set or tied career-highs in all four events. Ashley Ellsberry won the floor (9.975, career-high) and tied Germaine and Kelly for 1st on beam (9.95, career-high). ASU-Stanford (2/21/03): ASU posted the 9th-best score in school history with a 196.900. Maggie Germaine placed second in the all-around at 39.550 and tied for first on floor (9.950). Ashley Kelly tied for first on beam (9.950). ASU-UCLA (2/16/03): ASU set a school record score, yet lost to No. 1 UCLA, 198.400-198.150. Maggie Germaine won the AA, posting a career-best/school record 39.775. Ashley Kelly's 39.625 (ch) tied for 2nd. ASU's beam score of 49.875 was a school record and national season-high. Germaine and Ashley Ellsberry had career-high 10.0's on beam. On floor, Germaine and Cassidy Vreeke tied career-highs with 9.95, sharing 1st. ASU-Oregon State (2/16/03): Maggie Germaine won the all-around, posting a 39.400. Germaine tied for 1st on floor (9.925) and placed 2nd on beam (9.850). Cassidy Vreeke tied for 1st on vault (9.875). Ashley Ellsberry tied for 2nd on bars (9.875). ASU-UA (1/31/03): ASU recorded its 7th-highest score in school history, defeating No. 13 Arizona, 196.950-196.175 in Tucson. ASU set a school record on bars (49.475). Maggie Germaine tied her own school record (career-high) in the all-around (39.625). ASU-Utah (1/24/03): Arizona State gave 23rd-year head coach John Spini his first road victory over the Utah in Salt Lake City, defeating the Utes 197.450-197.150 in front of 9,032 fans at the Huntsman Center. The loss marked the second home loss for Utah this year, which is only the second time that has happened in its 28-year history. It was ASU's first victory over Utah in Salt Lake City since 1976. ASU posted its 3rd-highest ever team score. ASU-Washington (1/17/03): ASU opened the home season vs. No. 17 Washington and took 1st with a 197.300, the 3rd-highest team score in school history at the time. Maggie Germaine set a school record and career-high all-around total of 39.625, placing 1st. She also scored a career-high 9.90 on beam and tied a career-high on floor (9.95). Ashley Ellsberry tied a career-high with a 9.925 on floor and set career highs on vault (9.8) and bars (9.875). Kari Muth set a career-high on beam (9.9) and tied a career best on bars (9.9). Ashley Kelly posted career highs in all four events: vault (9.875), bars (9.9), beam (9.95) and floor (9.825). ASU-Maui Invitational (1/3/03): ASU beat New Hampshire and San Jose State, but lost to Stanford (196.050-194.200). Ashley Kelly had a big debut, placing 3rd in the all-around (38.975).
ASU's John Spini Collects Home Win No. 154 -- ASU head coach John Spini, in his 23rd year, now has 154 career victories at home, with the UNO's Classic wins over No. 25 California and Rutgers being Nos. 150 and 151.
Sun Devils Hot In All-Around -- ASU posted the top 11 all-Around scores in school history this season in 14 meets (and 18 of the top 23). Maggie Germaine owns seven of the scores. Ashley Kelly owns seven, including the school record while Ashley Ellsberry posted four.
