- Five home runs and solid pitching powered the #10 Sun Devil Softball squad over the #17 Baylor Bears as they added two more wins to their tab with a 3-0 win in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader and a 5-3 win for the second of the series as the Devils now stand at 28-1.
The Devils were led by Kaitlin Cochran, who notched two home runs, one in each game, as well as Sharee Zaleski, Ashley Werschky and Mindy Cowles who all hit one over the fence as well. The Sun Devil pitchers stepped up huge as well with Katie Burkhart grabbing her twelfth win on the season striking out 12 in the first game followed by Desiree Serrano's complete game win over the Bears.
The first game was a pitching battle until the fourth inning when ASU's Jackie Vasquez's single down the left line was brought home from a huge home run over the center field wall by Kaitlin Cochran. ASU also tacked on one more in the fifth with a lead-off solo shot from first-baseman Sharee Zaleski, with the Devil defense shutting out the Bears for only the second time this season for Baylor.
Game two was more offensive with the Devils grabbing all five of their runs in the first three innings off of two home runs and an error. The Bears rallied back though, with the bases loaded they drove in two with two hits and an ASU error. The Bears also added another in the sixth with a solo home run from the Baylor catcher, , but the Devils were able to hold the lead, taking the game 5-3.
Next up, the #10 Devils will travel to to compete in the Judi Garman Classic where they start pool play Thursday and Friday against Notre Dame, and Cal State Fullerton before continuing on in bracket play the rest of the weekend.
