AMES, Iowa - Ninth-rated Cole Sanderson pinned No. 17 Quinn Foster at 149 pounds and his teammates Cody and Cael also beat ranked opponents to lead the sixth-ranked Iowa State wrestlers to a 27-7 win over No. 12 Arizona State in Hilton Coliseum. Freshman Cyclone 165-pounder Joe Heskett, ranked first nationally, beat No. 10 Steve Blackford, 3-2 to remain unbeaten with a 29-0 record. Iowa State improves to 19-5-1 in dual competition. Arizona State is 9-7-1.
Sophomore Cole Sanderson scored a first period reversal against Foster, and then pinned the Sun Devil in 2:25 to improve to 20-9 with his fifth victory by fall of the season. Foster is now 21-10 with two losses to Cole Sanderson. The meet began with second-rated Cale Sanderson's 6-2 victory over fifth-rated Casey Strand at 184 pounds. The decision improved the freshman's record to 30-0, Strand is now 28-4 with two losses to Cael Sanderson. The oldest Sandreson, third-ranked junior 133-pounder Cody, improved to 24-4 with a 4-2 victory over fourth-ranked Eric Larkin. Larkin falls to 20-3 with two losses to Cody Sanderson.
"I was happy with how we performed today," ISU head coach Bobby Douglas said. "When you consider how hard we have been training, I thought this was a great effort. Our goal is to get ready for the Big 12 and NCAA Championships."
The Cyclones play host to Northern Iowa next Sunday in their dual season finale. Iowa State will play host to the Big 12 meet March 6 in Hilton Coliseum. The NCAA Championship is March 18-20 in State College, Pa.
