TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil Baseball sophomore shortstop Colby Woodmansee has earned an invitation to compete for a roster spot on the 2015 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team.
Woodmansee will report to Team USA on June 18 and final rosters will be announced on June 24. If he makes the team, Woodmansee will remain with the Collegiate National Team through July 9.
The Collegiate National Team opens its summer competition against the Holly Spring Salamanders on June 20 at the National Training Complex in Cary, N.C., and will also face Chinese Taipei seven times throughout the month, as well as a five-game set with Cuba in July. The team ends the summer against Canada and the USA Pan Am Games Team in Americas Baseball Festival.
Woodmansee will look to become the 20th ASU student-athlete to play for the Collegiate National Team and to extend the program’s nation-leading streak of eight consecutive summers with at least one Sun Devil on the team. Head Coach Tracy Smith has mentored three members of the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team.
ASU has sent 19 student-athletes to play for the Collegiate National Team since 1990, which is the fifth most among all schools, and 10 Sun Devils have been on the team since 2007. A Sun Devil has been a member of the team in 15 different years, fourth most among all schools, and a total of 20 Devils have represented the United States as Oddibe McDowell was a member of the 1984 Olympic team.
Woodmansee, a graduate of Desert Vista High School in Phoenix, was a 2015 First-Team All-Pac-12 member and earned Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention recognition. He started all 58 games at shortstop and was the first shortstop to lead the team in RBI since Jerry Maddox in 1975. He tallied a .308 batting average with 44 RBI, 74 hits, including a team-high 18 doubles, one triple and five home runs, and scored 36 runs as he finished in the top five on the team in nine offensive categories.
