Women's Water Polo to Finish Season at CS San Bernardino

Once again, the Sun Devils (9-16) head out to California this weekend, this time to play in a mini-tournament hosted by Cal State San Bernardino (22-6), Saturday, April 20. ASU will play the hosts at 10:30 am and Chapman University (9-9) of Orange, Calif. at 1:00 pm. Both games will be at the Coyote Aquatic Center on the CSUSB campus. These games mark the end of the season for the Sun Devils as they are not yet eligible for post-season play.

Sun Devil Notes
Senior transfer Kim Yost is ASU's statistical leader in three categories: goals (47), assists (27) and steals (66). She is tied with freshman Bryn Kuech for most goals scored in a single game after her five-goal performance vs. Villanova. She also has two four-goal performances (vs. Santa Clara, vs. UC Davis) and has been held scoreless only six times. Yost scored three goals against UC-Santa Cruz in the Sun Devils' only win in last weekend's tournament in Long Beach ... Kuech is third in assists (22), third in steals (49) and third in goals scored (30). Her five-goal performance came in ASU's win over Sonoma State ... Ashley Orzalli, a sophomore co-captain and ASU's second-leading scorer (35) has tallied at least one goal in 21-of-25 games this season. In five games last weekend, Orzalli led the Sun Devils with six goals and eight assists. Orzalli's 17 shots last weekend helped to place her first on the team with 84 for the season ... other Sun Devils to score this season are Lauren Jacobson (12), Lena Soghomonian (12), Kim Currie (9), Kelly Prezkop (8), Catherine Taber (6), Lindsey Murillo (6), Robin Kimbrell (6) and Christine Hurbis (2) ... senior goalie Nancy Holmes has 196 saves this year, while allowing 175 goals (53 percent). She also has eight assists ... Kristen Gilcrease is Holmes' backup, logging 26 saves while allowing 15 goals (63 percent) ... also aiding ASU's defensive efforts are Soghomonian with 53 steals, Taber with 39, and Kimbrell with 35 ... Taber had 13 steals at the Long Beach tournament last weekend ... the Sun Devils have converted on 49 of their 129 6-on-5 situations this year (38%), while opponents have converted on 47 of 109 (43%).

Independent Again
While confirmed to join the MPSF (Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) in time for the 2004 season, ASU announced that it will again operate as an independent next season.

Last Time For ASU
The Sun Devils finished eighth at the Long Beach State Invitational that concluded on Sunday. ASU finished with a 1-4 mark after facing four ranked opponents. The lone 7-5 win came in the second game against UC-Santa Cruz, with Yost, Murillo and Orzalli getting on the scoresheet. Over the weekend, Orzalli led the squad in shots (17), assists (8) and goals (6). In the 7th place game on Sunday, the Devils lost a close 8-7 battle against #20 Cal Baptist despite a rally for three goals in the fourth quarter.
