The Arizona State Sun Devils (3-1, 0-0 Pac-10) take their first road trip of the season to Hawaii for the Wahine Volleyball Challenge hosted by the University of Hawaii, Thursday, September 10 through Saturday, September 12 in the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. Participating schools are No. 13 Hawaii, Arizona State, Baylor and Bradley.
ABOUT HAWAII
The Wahines enter this weekend's matches with a 2-1 record ... they are coached by Dave Shoji (UC Santa Barbara '69) ... UH registered wins over UCLA (3-0) and Ohio State (3-0) in the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic last weekend before falling to Florida (1-3) ... Hawaii leads the series with ASU, 5-1-1 ... UH won the last meeting between the two teams in 1995 in the NCAA Pacific Regional Semifinal, 3-1.
ABOUT BRADLEY
The Braves are 2-1 heading into this weekend's matches ... they are coached by Scott Luster (Missouri '66) ... currently senior middle blocker Tegan Catlin leads the sqaud averaging 4.00 kills per game ... junior outside hitter Abby Kohnen is averaging 3.5 kills per game ... last weekend Bradley notched wins over Northeast La. (3-0) and Western Kentucky (3-1) and lost to Missouri (0-3) ... this will be the first meeting between the two teams.
ABOUT BAYLOR
The Bears nter this weekend's matchups with a 3-2 record ... they are coached by Brian Hosfeld (Long Beach Sate '91) ... Junior outside hitter Elisha Polk currently leads the sqaud in kills, averaging 4.44 per game as well as a team-leading 3.89 digs per game ... Arizona State leads the all-time series, 1-0.
HOMEGROWN TALENT
Head coach Patti Snyder-Park doesn't have to look far to find some of the top talent in the volleyball community. It's right in her backyard. Eight out of 13 players on the 1998 Sun Devil squad hail from the state of Arizona. Seven of the eight are from the Phoenix area. Five of the six starters call the Grand Canyon state home.
ALL-TOURNAMENT SELECTIONS
Junior setter Jolynn Faatulu and freshman outisde hitter Jami Coughlin were both named to the Airport Hilton/Sun Devil Challenge all-tournament team. Coughlin averaged 4.00 kills and 3.15 digs for the tourney. Faatulu averaged 12.54 assists per game and notched five service aces. Other all-tournametn selections were Tai Bethune (GWU), Jeannette Hecker (LMU), Cindy Weglarz (LMU) and tourney MVP Sarah McFarland (LMU).
HEAD COACH SNYDER-PARK
Sun Devils head coach Patti Snyder-Park enters her tenth season with the Arizona State volleyball program. She has guided the Devils to four NCAA tournament appearances in the past six years including a semifinal match appearance at the NCAA Pacific Regional in 1995. Snyder-Park has taken ASU to post-season competition in five of her last eight seasons and has posted a winning record in six of the last seven seasons. She has a career record of 148-112 at Arizona State.
RUNNING THE SHOW
Junior Jolynn Faatulu returns to run the Sun Devil offense in 1998. The 5-9 setter from Long Beach, California ranks sixth in career assists at ASU with 1,724. She will captain the '98 squad along with junior Jamie Peck.Faatulu is currently averaing 13.06 assists and 3.29 digs per game. She is leading the team in service aces with five. Backing up Faatulu at the setter position will be newcomer Becky Sidoti (Golden West JC).
THE HYPE ON HIBSMAN Junior middle blocker Laura Hibsman leads the corps. of middle blockers this season. Hibsman ended the 1997 season with 80 block assists and 12 block solos (second on the team). The 6-0 middle also averaged 2.00 kills per game in 1997 as well as a team-high .264 attack percentage. She will be joined in the middle by Shawna Vanley, Michelle Mortensen and Ashley Ottman.
TALK ABOUT TOUGH
The Sun Devils will once again play some of the toughest competition in the nation with 12 matches versus teams ranked in the preseason polls, including five squads from the Pac-10.
BURBRIDGE TAKES OVER
Sophomore outsdie hitter Amanda Burbridge will take over on the left side for departed senior Terri Cox. Through four matches, Burbridge, a '97 Pac-10 All-Freshman selection, is averaging 4.59 kills per game and 2.76 digs. The 6-2 hitter from Scottsdale, Ariz. will be joined by freshmen Jami Coughlin, who is averaging 3.82 kills per game.

INJURY UPDATE
Junior middle blocker Laura Hibsman had her appendix removed August 27. She is practicing with the team this week and is listed as day-to-day. Junior opposite hitter Jamie Peck has a slight groin injury and will play as pain permits.
