ASU Volleyball Set to Take on Bay Area Schools

The Arizona State Sun Devils (12-11, 3-9 Pac-10), trying to snap a four-game conference losing streak, are back home this weekend to face No. 3 Stanford on Friday, November 7 at 3 p.m. MST and California on Saturday, November 8 at 7 p.m. MST. Friday's match with the Cardinal will be broadcast on a tape-delayed basis on FOX Sports Net at 8:30 p.m. MST. Jim Watson and Heather Cox will provide the play-by-play and color respectively.

ABOUT STANFORD The Cardinal are 22-2 overall, 13-0 in conference action ... Kristin Folkl (5.59 kpg and 2.47 dpg) and Barbara Ifejika (2.82 kpg and 1.04 bpg) lead a balanced Stanford attack ... Stanford has not lost a match since September 6th ... They are coached by Don Shaw (14th season) ... ASU last win over Stanford came on October 22, 1993 in Tempe (3-0) ... the Cardinal holds a 31-3 advantage in the all-time series with the Devils ... Stanford defeated ASU earlier this season, 3-0 (15-11, 15-12, 15-10) in Palo Alto.

ABOUT CALIFORNIA The Golden Bears are 7-15 overall, 2-11 in Pac-10 play ... They are led by Jessica Dinaberg (3.09 kpg and 2.69 dpg) and Amanda Selby (2.11 kpg and 1.22 bpg) ... Cal is 1-4 in its last five matches ... They are coached by Sue Woodstra (third season) ... The Devils have won the last nine meetings with the Bears dating back to the 1993 season ... ASU leads the all-time series with Cal, 19-8 ... California's last victory over the Devils came on November 7, 1992 (3-1) in Tempe ... ASU defeated Cal earlier this season, 3-2 (4-15, 7-15, 15-10, 15-12, 15-11).

INJURY UPDATE Starting setter Jolynn Faatulu went down in the third game of the Oregon State match on 10/18 with an injury to her right ankle. The sophomore suffered an avulsion fracture to the ankle and is out indefinitely. Taking over setting duties will be freshman Carmen Fusco (San Clemente, Calif./Capo Valley Christian HS).

HEAD COACH SNYDER-PARK Sun Devils head coach Patti Snyder-Park enters her ninth season with the Arizona State volleyball program. She has guided the Devils to four NCAA tournament appearances in the past five years including a semifinal match appearance at the NCAA Mountain Regional in 1995. Snyder-Park has taken ASU to post-season competition in five of her last eight seasons and has posted a winning record in six of the last seven seasons. She has a career record of 147-109 at Arizona State.

COX DOES IT ALL Senior outside hitter Terri Cox looks to finish out her remarkable career with style. Cox has grabbed MVP honors in two tournaments this season (Sun Devil Challenge and Ladyjack Invit.) and was an all-tournament selection at the Judy Bellomo Classic as well. Once again, she is leading the squad in both kills (4.47 kpg) and digs (3.54 dpg). She has recorded a double-double in 15 of 21 matches played this season. Cox has become the seventh player in ASU history to record over 1,000 kills and digs in her career.

MATTSON IN THE MIDDLE Senior middle blocker Kirstin Mattson will captain the squad this season along with teammate Jen Lucero. Mattson was named to the all-tournament team at the Sun Devil Challenge in August. The 6-1 middle leads the team in block solos with 25 and block assists (92) in 1997. Mattson becomes the sixth Sun Devil to rack up over 100 solo blocks and 200 block assists during her career.

TALK ABOUT TOUGH The Sun Devils have faced a ranked opponent in nine of its last 13 matches and face 3rd-ranked Stanford along with California this weekend. ASU has played a ranked opponent in 10 of its 23 matches this season, including eight of 12 conference matches.
