Arizona State Volleyball Hosts Oregon Schools

The Arizona State volleyball team (11-7, 2-5 Pac-10) wraps up the first half of conference action this weekend hosting Oregon on Friday, October 17 at 7 p.m. and Oregon State on Saturday, October 18 at 7 p.m. in the University Activity Center.
LAST WEEK IN THE BAY AREA: Arizona State split its matches with the Bay Area schools, beating the Golden Bears, 3-2 on Friday and falling to the 4th-ranked Cardinal, 0-3 on Saturday night. Senior Terri Cox recorded a match-high 18 kills and 20 digs on Friday and while teammate Kirstin Mattson contributed 16 kills, 10 digs, one block solo and six block assists ... Mattson was the only Devil in double figures on Saturday night, notching 12 kills and 10 digs on the evening.
ABOUT OREGON: The Ducks are 7-11 overall, 0-7 in conference action ... They are led by junior Madeline Ernst (3.50 kpg, 2.08 dpg) and Alli White (2.75 kpg and 2.18 dpg) ... Oregon is on a nine-game losing streak entering the matchup with ASU ... They are coached by Cathy Nelson (fourth season) ... ASU leads the all-time series with the Ducks, 16-6 ... The Devils have won 11 of the last 12 meetings with Oregon dating back to the 1991 season ... Oregon's last victory over ASU came on October 26, 1996 in Tempe.
ABOUT OREGON STATE: The Beavers are 10-9 overall, 2-5 in conference play heading into this weekend's matches ... They are led by senior outside hitters Heather Lowe (4.43 kpg and 2.35 dpg) and Pia Ahlengard (3.84 kpg and 3.25 dpg) ... Oregon State is on a two-game losing streak and are 3-2 in their last five games ... They are coached by Jeff Mozzochi (fifth season) ... ASU's last win over the Beavers came on October 7, 1995 in Tempe (3-0) ... the Devils have lost the last three matches with OSU and are 3-3 in the last six meetings with the Beavers ... Arizona State holds a 17-6 advantage in the all-time series with OSU.
FOR THE RECORD: Senior Terri Cox should move into the top three in career digs at ASU by the end of the '97 season. She is currently ranked fourh all-time with 1,262 digs and needs 103 digs to move into the top two. The top spot held by Christy Nore (1985-88) who racked up 1,597 in her four-year career. Cox has also moved into the top 10 in career kills with 1,066 (8th). She becomes the seventh player in ASU history to record over 1,000 kills and digs in her career. Senior middle blocker Kirstin Mattson has moved into the top 10 all-time for block assists this year. She currently has 214 which ranks her 8th all-time. She also need just three blolck solos to reach 100 for her career.

HEAD COACH SNYDER-PARK: Sun Devils head coach Patti Snyder-Park enters her ninth season with the Arizona State volleyball program. She has guided the Devils to four NCAA tournament appearances in the past five years including a semifinal match appearance at the NCAA Mountain Regional in 1995. Snyder-Park has taken ASU to post-season competition in five of her last eight seasons and has posted a winning record in six of the last seven seasons. She has a career record of 146-105 at Arizona State.
COX DOES IT ALL: Senior outside hitter Terri Cox looks to finish out her remarkable career with style. Cox has grabbed MVP honors in two tournaments this season (Sun Devil Challenge and Ladyjack Invit.) and was an all-tournament selection at the Judy Bellomo Classic as well. Once again, she is leading the squad in both kills (4.45 kpg) and digs (3.60 dpg). She has had a double- double in 12 of ASU's 18 matches this season. The 1996 first-team All-Pac-10 selection finished last season ranked second in the nation in digs averaging 4.90 per game and finished 11th in the country in kills with 5.07 per game.
MATTSON IN THE MIDDLE: Senior middle blocker Kirstin Mattson will captain the squad this season along with teammate Jen Lucero. Mattson was named to the all-touranment team at the Sun Devil Challenge in August. She led the team last year with 1.26 blocks per game and was second on the team in kills with 2.55 per game. The 6-1 middle leads the team in block solos with 21 and block assists (67) in 1997. She notched the her third double-double of the year over the weekend with 12 kills and 10 digs vs. Stanford.
FAATULU ASSISTS DEVILS: Sophomore Jolynn Faatulu will run the court for ASU in 1997 after returning from ACL knee surgery which kept her our of action last season. Faatulu is a two-time all-tournament selection this season and is averaging 12.29 assists and 2.14 digs per game.
TALK ABOUT TOUGH: The Sun Devils will face nine teams ranked in the preseason top 25 (USA Today/AVCA) during 1997. Six of those are Pac-10 teams which ASU must face twice during the season.
