Arizona State Volleyball Hosts Washington Schools

The Arizona State volleyball team (9-5, 0-3 Pac-10), looking for their first Pac-10 win of the season, faces conference rival Washington on Friday, October 3 at 7 p.m. and sixth-ranked Washington State Saturday, October 4 both at 7 p.m. in the University Activity Center.

LAST WEEK IN TUCSON: Arizona State lost a 2-3 heartbreaker to 16th-ranked Arizona last Friday in Tucson. Game scores were 15-7, 15-9, 2-15, 14-16, 15-9. Senior outside hitter Terri Cox led the Devils offensively and defensively notching a match-high 20 kills and 17 digs.
ABOUT WASHINGTON: The Huskies are 8-5 overall heading into this weekend's matchup with the Devils ... Makare Desilets currently leads the team offensively averaging4.00 kills per game ... Leslie Tuiasosopo and Amy Tutt are adding 3.58 and 3.00 kills per game respectively ... Setter Angie Coma is averaging 11.76 assists per game ... Defensively, Desilets and Tuiasosopo are putting up1.90 and1.67 blocks per game ... Washington is coming off a 1-3 loss to UCLA (9/27). The Huskies are coached by Bill Neville (George Williams College '67), now in this 7th season at the helm of the program ... Washington holds a 16-10 advantage in the all-time series with Arizona State ... Washington won both games played between the two teams last season, 0-3 (10/18) in Washington and 1-3 (11/16) in Tempe.
ABOUT WASHINGTON STATE: The Cougars are currently 16-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play ... Jennifer Stinson leads the team offensively with 3.55 kills per game ... Keren Oigman and Shannon Wyckoff are adding 3.07 and 2.77 kills per game respectivley ... Setter Stephanie Papke is averaging 12.70 assists per game ...Defensively, Stinson and Wendy Rouse are putting up 1.85 and 1.06 blocks per game ... The Cougars are coached by Cindy Fredrick (Augustana '74), now in her 9th season at Washington State ... Arizona State has a 9-8 lead in the all-time series with the Cougars ... Washington State won both games played with Arizona State last season, 0-3 (10/20) at Washington State and 0-3 (11/15) in at Arizona State.
FOR THE RECORD: Senior Terri Cox should move into the top three in career digs at ASU by the end of the '97 season. She is currently ranked seventh all-time with 1,189 digs and needs just 112 digs to move into the top three. The top spot held by Christy Nore (1985-88) who racked up 1,597 in her four-year career. Cox should also move into the top 10 in career kills. The outside hitter has career 994 kills. Senior middle blocker Kirstin Mattson has moved into the top 10 all-time for block assists this year. She currently has 195 and which ranks her 10th all-time.
HEAD COACH SNYDER-PARK: Sun Devils head coach Patti Snyder-Park enters her ninth season with the Arizona State volleyball program. She has guided the Devils to four NCAA tournament appearances in the past five years including a semifinal match appearance at the NCAA Mountain Regional in 1995. Snyder-Park has taken ASU to post-season competition in five of her last eight seasons and has posted a winning record in six of the last seven seasons. She has a career record of 144-103 at Arizona State.
COX DOES IT ALL: Senior outside hitter Terri Cox looks to finish out her remarkable career with style. Cox has grabbed MVP honors in two tournaments this season (Sun Devil Challenge and Ladyjack Invit.) and was an all-tournament selection at the Judy Bellomo Classic as well. Once again, she is leading the squad in both kills (4.58 kpg) and digs (3.36 dpg). She has had a double double in nie of ASU's 14 matches this season. The 1996 first-team All-Pac-10 selection finished last season ranked second in the nation in digs averaging 4.90 per game and finished 11th in the country in kills with 5.07 per game.
MATTSON IN THE MIDDLE: Senior middle blocker Kirstin Mattson will captain the squad this season along with teammate Jen Lucero. Mattson was named to the all-touranment team at the Sun Devil Challenge in August. She led the team last year with 1.26 blocks per game and was second on the team in kills with 2.55 per game. The 6-1 middle leads the team in block solos with 17 and is second in block assists (45) in 1997.
FAATULU ASSISTS DEVILS: Sophomore Jolynn Faatulu will run the court for ASU in 1997 after returning from ACL knee surgery which kept her our of action last season. Faatulu is a two-time all-tournament selection this season and is averaging 12.68 assists and 2.52 digs per game.
TALK ABOUT TOUGH: The Sun Devils will face nine teams ranked in the preseason top 25 (USA Today/AVCA) during 1997. Six of those are Pac-10 teams which ASU must face twice during the season.
