Arizona State Volleyball Kicks Off Conference Play
Sun Devils Host Australian National Team (9/16) Before Traveling to Los Angeles for Pac-10 Matchups with USC (9/19) and UCLA (9/20)

The Arizona State volleyball team (9-2, 0-0 Pac-10) hosts the Australian National Team on Tuesday, September 16 at 7 p.m. at the University Activity Center in an exhibition match. The Devils will then travel to Los Angeles, California to begin conference action, facing #8 USC (7-0) on Friday, September 19 and #17 UCLA (4-1) on Saturday, September 20.
UCSB JUDY BELLOMO CLASSIC Arizona State went 2-2 at the UCSB Judy Bellomo Classic over the weekend. ASU notched wins over South Florida (3-2) and Portland State (3-1) while falling to No. 15 Loyola Marymount (0-3) and No. 7 UC Santa Barbara (0-3). Senior outside hitter Terri Cox was named to the all-tournament team.
ABOUT UCLA The Bruins are 4-1 overall heading into this weekend's matchup with the Devils ... The tandem of senior outside hitters Kara Milling and Tanisha Larkin are averaging 6.06 and 4.06 kills per game respectively ... Senior setter Kim Coleman is leading the Pac-10 in assists with 15.65 assists per game ... Defensively, Larkin is averaging 3.76 digs per game ... The Bruins are coached by Andy Banachowski (UCLA '68), now in this 31st season at the helm of the program ... UCLA holds a 36-5 advantage in the all-time series with the Devils ... ASU lost both matchups with the Bruins last season, 2-3 (10/5) and 0-3 (11/1) ... ASU's last win vs. UCLA came on 11/10/95 with a 3-0 victory in Tempe.
ABOUT USC The Trojans are 7-0 overall heading into Pac-10 play ... Junior outside hitter Jennifer Kessey is averaging 4.70 kills per game while junior setter Janice Mounts is ranked third in the conference in assists with 12.95 per game ... Junior middle blocker Alaina Kipps is third in the loop averaging 1.75 blocks per game ... The Trojans are coached by Lisa Love (Texas Tech '78) now in her ninth year at the helm ... USC holds a 29-10 advantage over the Devils in the all-time series ... ASU lost both matchups with the Trojans last season, 2-3 (10/4) and 0-3 (11/2) ... The Devils' last victory over USC came on 11/11/95 with a 3-2 win in Tempe.
FOR THE RECORD Senior Terri Cox should move into the top three in career digs at ASU by the end of the '97 season. She is currently ranked eighth all-time with 1,155 digs and needs just 129 digs to move into the top three. The top spot held by Christy Nore (1985-88) who racked up 1,597 in her four-year career. Cox should also move into the top 10 in career kills. The outside hitter has career 947 kills. Senior middle blocker Kirstin Mattson has moved into the top 10 all-time for block assists this year. She currently has 187 and which ranks her 10th all-time.
HEAD COACH SNYDER-PARK Sun Devils head coach Patti Snyder-Park enters her ninth season with the Arizona State volleyball program. She has guided the Devils to four NCAA tournament appearances in the past five years including a semifinal match appearance at the NCAA Mountain Regional in 1995. Snyder-Park has taken ASU to post-season competition in five of her last eight seasons and has posted a winning record in six of the last seven seasons. She has a career record of 144-100 at Arizona State.
COX DOES IT ALL Senior outside hitter Terri Cox looks to finish out her remarkable career with style. Cox has grabbed MVP honors in two tournaments this season (Sun Devil Challenge and Ladyjack Invit.) and was an all-tournament selection at the Judy Bellomo Classic last weekend. She currently ranks eighth in career digs at ASU with 1, 155. The 1996 first-team All-Pac-10 selection finished last season ranked second in the nation in digs averaging 4.90 per game and finished 11th in the country in kills with 5.07 per game.
MATTSON IN THE MIDDLE Senior middle blocker Kirstin Mattson will captain the squad this season. Mattson was named to the all-touranment team at the Sun Devil Challenge in August. She led the team last year with 1.26 blocks per game and was second on the team in kills with 2.55 per game. The 6-1 middle leads the team in block solos with 13 and is second in block assists (40) in 1997.
FAATULU ASSISTS DEVILS Sophomore Jolynn Faatulu will run the court for ASU in 1997 after returning from ACL knee surgery which kept her our of action last season. Faatulu is a two-time all-tournament selection this season and is averaging 12.87 assists and 2.58 digs per game. She notched a career-high 64 assists vs. Portland State over the weekend.
TALK ABOUT TOUGH The Sun Devils will face nine teams ranked in the preseason top 25 (USA Today/AVCA) during 1997. Six of those are Pac-10 teams which ASU must face twice during the season.
