TEMPE, Ariz. - Four players from the 12th-ranked Arizona State women's tennis team competed at the first day of the 1999 National Collegiate Tennis Classic held on the courts at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, California.
In opening round matches, ASU's Kerry Giardino, the No. 6 seed, was upset by California's Claire Curran, 7-5, 6-3. Sun Devil senior Katy Propstra prevailed in a long, close match against Brandi Fredenberg of UCLA, 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-4. However, Propstra would fall in the second-round to top-seeded Marissa Irvin of Stanford, 6-2, 6-3.
? Other hard-fought opening-round matches for ASU included sophomore Faye DeVera defeating Pepperdine's Cintia Tortorella, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 and freshman Allison Bradshaw downing Francesca La'O of California, 7-6 (3), 5-7, 7-6 (5).
In the second-round, Bradshaw defeated teammate DeVera to advance onto the third round on Saturday.
