Sun Devils Advance in ITA/Rolex Championships
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Kerry Giardino and Reka Cseresnyes advanced to the third round of play at the Rolex Intercollegiate Tennis Championships on Friday. The first day of competition was rained out but the Sun Devils fared well in the make up day of competition. Giardino defeated her first round opponent Mara Colaizzi from Loyola Marymount, 6-1, 6-3 as well as defeating her second round challenger Susanna Wallin after Wallin had to retire in the second set. Ceresnyes defeated Lisa Papi of San Diego State, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the first round and knocked off Susie Kocsis from UNLV, 6-1, 6-1 in the second round of play.
The doubles teams of Ceresnyes and Faye DeVera, as well as Giardino and Stephanie Lansdorp also advanced to the third round of play in the doubles bracket. DeVera and Ceresnyes defeated the team of Hesse and Prior from San Diego University, 9-8 and the UCLA team of Freudenberg and Rudolph, 8-3. Giardino and Lansdorp blanked the hometown team of Exon and Nasca from UCI, 8-0 in the first round and defeated Bhaguardas and Donovan from SDSU, 8-2. The Sun Devils will face third round opponents tomorrow at the University of Irvine campus.
