ASU's DeVera, McCoury, Nash Advance to ITA Qualifier
TEMPE, Ariz.-- ASU freshman Faye DeVera and the doubles team of freshman Celena McCoury and senior Alison Nash escaped the first and second rounds of pre-qualifying action at the Riviera All-American Tennis Tournament Saturday and Sunday held at the Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles.
The three are among eight singles players and four doubles teams playing in Tuesday's qualifying rounds. The event is the second leg of the Rolex/ITA Collegiate Grand Slam.
DeVera defeated Fresno State's Laura Townsend 6-2, 6-1 in round 1, got past Utah's Megan Payne 6-2, 6-1 in the second round, and defeated Vanderbilt's Stacy Ryan 7-5, 6-4 in round 3.
McCoury and Nash blanked the team of Valkova and Pous (Tennessee Tech) 6-0, 6-0 in Saturday's first round. The Sun Devil duo then defeated UNLV's Goude and Vallenhoff 6-4, 6-1 in round 2 and Tulsa's Despain and Van Exel 6-3, 7-6 (3) in the third round.
DeVera faces Alena Wygonowska of Oregon, while McCoury and Nash take on Wisconsin's Nathan and Zobrist in Tuesday's Qualifier.
The main draw of the tournament begins Thursday, when ASU senior Reka Cseresnyes, ranked 14th nationally, and the doubles team of junior Katy Propstra and senior Stephanie Lansdorp, ranked sixth in the nation, will compete.
