Women's Swimming & Diving Defeated At UCLA 179-118

Nov. 10, 2000

LOS ANGELES -- Arizona State's 19th-ranked women's swimming and diving team lost to UCLA 179-118 Friday as the Sun Devils encountered their first Pac-10 opponent of the season at the Men's Gym Pool and the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center on the campus of UCLA in Westwood, Calif.

The loss drops ASU to 1-1 on the season, while moving UCLA to a perfect 3-0. Although the Bruins improved their all-time advantage over ASU to 11-7-1, it was the first time in three years that the Sun Devils lost to UCLA (victory in 1999, tie in 1998).

Junior All-American Sarah Baham (Arcadia, Calif.) was the only Sun Devil swimmer to win an individual event, taking the 200 yard butterfly in 2:03.21 while fellow junior and teammate Alicia Wheelock (Redlands, Calif.) swam to second in 2:03.64. Junior diver Natalie Burgess (Phoenix, Ariz.) picked up the only other solo win for ASU, beating the field of the 3-meter dive with a total of 277.50. The Sun Devil's also picked up first and second-place points in the 200 yard freestyle relay with times of 1:36.40 and 1:42.28.

The Bruins were led by a trio of double-winners: junior Jennifer Noddle, freshman Sarah Platzer and sophomore Erin Zehntener. Noddle took first-place in both the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke, edging ASU junior All-American Riley Mants (Winnipeg, Canada) in both races. In the 100, Noddle finished in 1:05.00, just three-tenths of a second faster than Mants at 1:05.30. In the 200, Noddle (2:18.80) bested Mants (2:20.05) by more than a second. Platzer took victories in the 100 (51.01) and 200 (1:52.15) yard free, as the Bruins claimed five of the top-six spots between the two events.

Zehntner swam a blistering 10:06.16 to take the 1000 yard free ahead of a pair of Sun Devils, junior Amanda Stanford (Oakland, Calif.) in 10:12.34 and sophomore Lyndsay Devaney (Mira Loma, Calif.) in 10:13.57. Devaney (5:00.62) and Stanford (5:02.38) swapped finishes for the 500 yard free, but were still bested by Zehntner's 4:59.10.

The Sun Devils' opening road trip doesn't get any easier tomorrow, as the team remains in Sourthern California to face No. 5 USC at 1:00 p.m. PST (2:00 p.m. MST).
