TEMPE, Ariz. - With a three-day total of 877 points, the Arizona State women's swimming and diving team placed sixth at the 2000 Pac-10 Championships in Long Beach, Calif., equaling its finish from the past four years. The University of Arizona ended Stanford's 13-year run of conference championships by placing first overall with 1325 points.
Sun Devil sophomore Sarah Baham carded her second top-five finish in as many days Saturday, following up a fourth place finish in the 100-yard butterfly by touching fifth in the 200 fly (1:59.61). In 200 breaststroke competition, ASU sophomore Riley Mants placed sixth in a time of 2:15.69. Arizona State also got a season best and NCAA consideration time of 3:23.99 from its 400 freestyle relay team of Carolyn Adel, Claire Hedenskog, Baham and Tennille Taylor, which finished fifth. Stanfords top 400 free squad set a new NCAA record with its 3:17.78 performance.
The diving portion of the championships wrapped up at the USC McDonalds Swim Stadium, where ASU junior Trish Malatesta placed third in the platform event with a total of 399.40 points. Following in the fifth position was Sun Devil senior Katrina Pfeuffer (393.65), who carded top-10 finishes in all three events held.
The Arizona State swimmers will have a final opportunity to qualify for next month's NCAA Championships on Sunday at the Pac-10 Invitational, also at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach.
