Women's Soccer Loses to California
TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State soccer team (11-7-1, 5-3-1 Pac-10) ended its 1997 regular season with a 4-0 loss to California (11-7-1, 6-3-0 Pac-10), Sunday before 323 fans at Sun Devil Soccer Field.
The first half was scoreless for both teams, but the Golden Bears came out fired up in the second half, outshooting the Sun Devils 12-3.
At the 52:06 mark, forward Mary Oades tallied Cal's first goal on a breakaway, shooting the ball pass the diving ASU keeper. Seven minutes later, Courtney Carroll got her own rebound off the ASU keeper and scored to put Cal up 2-0. Amy Balavac scored Cal's third goal off of an ASU turnover just out side of the box in the 64th minute. Cal would end the scoring with thirty seconds left in the match when midfielder Sarah Kaminsky tallied an unassisted goal.
Sun Devil goalkeeper Erin Reinke had six saves, while Cal's Maite Zabala stopped four shots and earned back-to-back shutouts. The Bears' outshot ASU 22-10. California extended a six-game winning streak with this victory.
Sun Devil freshman forward Jaclyn Clark and freshman midfielder Antoinette Marjanovic ended the season tied for the lead in points with 25. Clark also leads the team with 10 goals.
Arizona State hopes to earn its first playoff bid in its two years of play. The teams will be announced Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. on Fox Sports Arizona.
