May 18, 2000

May 24-27 NCAA Women's Golf Championships
Crosswater Golf Course * Sunriver, Ore.

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State women's golf team heads to Sunriver, Ore., for the 2000 NCAA Championships May 24-27 looking to capture their sixth NCAA title in eight years. Winners of six national crowns in the 1990s, the fourth-ranked Sun Devils are looking to start the new millennium off with another NCAA crown. Oregon State University plays host to the NCAA event which will be held at Sunriver's par 72, 6,482-yard Crosswater Golf Course. Tee times start at 9 a.m. Pacific time each day off the No. 1 and 10 tees. Tee times are predetermined for the first two rounds, while tee times for the final two rounds will be based on results. As the No. 4 team from the West, Arizona State is slated to tee off No. 10 at 2:20 p.m. on Wednesday and at 9:50 a.m. off No. 1 on Thursday.

A total of 24 teams will compete in this year's tournament, the most ever for the NCAA Championships, including 13 teams and three individuals from the NCAA West Regional (hosted by Arizona State last week) and 11 teams and three individuals from the East Regional (hosted by Ohio State). Qualifiers from the West are Arizona, San Jose State, USC, Arizona State, TCU, Stanford, Oregon, Pepperdine, Texas, Tulsa, Nebraska, Oklahoma and New Mexico State, while Duke, Northwestern, Purdue, Tennessee, LSU, Michigan State, Wake Forest, Auburn, Ohio State, Georgia and Florida will represent the East.

How They Got Here
The Sun Devils earned their eighth straight trip to the NCAA Championships and 18th overall with a fourth-place finish at the NCAA West Regional, held May 11-13 at ASU's Karsten Golf Course. Arizona State freshman Miriam Nagl shot a two-under 70 Saturday to win individual medalist honors, while the Sun Devils climbed from sixth to fourth after shooting a 292, the low round of the final day, to finish fourth with an 889. For Nagl, the victory was her second of the season. The ASU freshman broke par in all three rounds (71-68-70=209) to finish with a two-stroke lead over No. 3 Candie Kung of USC. Freshman Blair O'Neal and sophomore Lisa Meredith each finished at 227 to tie for 46th, sophomore Caroline Laurens tied for 56th (228) and junior Molly Cooper tied for 61st. Arizona State has never finished lower than fifth at the NCAA West Regional dating back to the inaugural event in 1993.

The Lineup
Arizona State's NCAA Championships lineup will feature freshman Miriam Nagl, sophomore Lisa Meredith, freshman Blair O'Neal, sophomore Caroline Laurens and junior Molly Cooper.

In the Rankings
Arizona State checked in at fourth in the latest MasterCard Collegiate Golf and Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. Individually, freshman Miriam Nagl returned to the No. 1 spot in the nation in the May 17 MasterCard individual rankings just ahead of Arizona's Jenna Daniels. Four other Sun Devils appear in the MasterCard rankings with freshman Blair O'Neal standing at 52nd, sophomore Caroline Laurens checking in at 67th, junior Molly Cooper at 82nd and sophomore Lisa Meredith at 100th.

Nagl Regains Top Spot
This week's Golf World Collegiate Player of the Week, freshman Miriam Nagl has regained the top spot in the national rankings after winning the NCAA West Regional last weekend. Nagl's No. 1 national ranking marks the third year that the Sun Devils have had the top-ranked player in the country heading into the NCAA Championships. Former Sun Devil Grace Park had held the No. 1 spot heading into the 1999 and 1998 NCAA Championships.

For Nagl, her No. 1 ranking marks the seventh time she has held that spot this season. She started the year ranked 14th in the preseason poll and moved to No. 1 on Oct. 6 after winning the NCAA Fall Preview. She spent four weeks at the beginning of the spring season in the No. 1 spot and the past six ranked second before moving back to No. 1 this week.

Head Coach Linda Vollstedt
Under the direction of 20th-year head coach Linda Vollstedt, Arizona State has captured six NCAA titles in the 1990s, twice as many as any other women's golf program in the nation. The Sun Devils have finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships in 10 of the last 12 years. Throughout her career, Vollstedt, herself a 1969 graduate of Arizona State, has guided 15 players to the professional ranks including 1998 U.S. Amateur champion Grace Park and 2000 U.S. Public Links champion Jody Niemann.

Four Sun Devils Named All-Pac-10
Arizona State freshman Miriam Nagl was named the 2000 Pac-10 Conference Freshman of the Year and earned first-team Pac-10 honors. Three other Sun Devils also earned all-conference accolades including sophomore Caroline Laurens, who was named to the second team after earning honorable-mention honors last year, and honorable-mention picks sophomore Lisa Meredith and freshman Blair O'Neal, who are both first-time honorees. Arizona State has had at least four All-Pac-10 Conference selections in each of the past seven seasons, while head coach Linda Vollstedt has coached a total of 68 all-conference players in her 20-year career at ASU.

Young Guns

After being ranked anywhere from 10th to 14th in the national preseason polls, the Sun Devils have climbed into a very familiar position in the national top five with a young team that features just one player returning from last year's NCAA Championships lineup (sophomore Caroline Laurens). Arizona State's 1999-2000 squad features just two juniors, two sophomores and two freshmen, while only one player, freshman Miriam Nagl, ranks in the national top 50.
