Tempe, Ariz. - The Arizona State women's golf team wrapped up the first day of the Pac-10 Championship in seventh place at ASU Karsten Golf Course, Sunday. The Sun Devils shot a 16-over 304 for the first round of play.
Junior Carlota Ciganda led Arizona State through 18 holes, shooting a 2-over 74. Ciganda is the reigning Pac-10 champion, placing first in both the 2009 and 2010 Pac-10 Championships. She is the only golfer in conference history to win back-to-back championships. She tied for 23rd after round one.
Following Ciganda are teammates Giulia Molinaro and Daniela Ordonez, both tied for 27th. Both junior Molinaro and freshman Ordonez shot a 4-over 76 in the first round. This is Ordonez's first time competing in the tournament.
Freshman Justine Lee finished the day tied for 37th where she shot a 6-over 78. This is Lee's first time competing in the Pac-10 Championships. Freshman Laura Blanco finished the day in 45th place with a score of 9-over 81.
Tiffany Lua of UCLA is in first place on the player leaderboard after round one with a score of 4-under 68. USC and Stanford are tied for first, both with a score of 6-under 282.
ASU hopes to come out strong on Mon., April 18 in round two of the women's Pac-10 Championships at the par-72, 6,230-yard ASU Karsten Golf Course. The Sun Devils have won the most Pac-10 titles in conference history with eight.
