ASU-UOFA SERIES: Arizona State leads the all-time series 29-15, but has lost the last eight in a row. The Sun Devils' last win over the Wildcats came in 1993 (75-58) - the fourth of four straight victories against UofA. Of the 16 meetings in the 90s, Arizona has won nine.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS: The Wildcats are coming off a 91-90 win over Stanford Monday night .After losing to Washington State 64-61 at the buzzer on Jan. 8, the then-No. 10 Wildcats bounced back to defeat seventh-ranked Washington (93-62) on Jan. 10. The win was Arizona's second over a ranked opponent this season. The Cats downed then-No. 12 Nebraska 68-56 on Dec. 7. UofA is averaging 80.4 points a game while limiting its opponents to 65.5 points. The Wildcats pace the conference in scoring margin (+14.9), field goal percentage defense (39.2), and assist-turnover ratio (0.81).
QUOTABLE: ASU senior Stephanie Freeman on sitting out against Washington -- "It was the hardest thing I've ever had to go through." ASU Coach Charli Turner Thorne -- "We're establishing ourselves as a winning team. Slowly but surely we are arriving where we want to be."
INJURY REPORT: FR center Jennifer Bennett is week-to-week after doctors found a stress fracture in her left leg on Dec. 16. Bennett is doubtful for the Arizona game. FR G Ebony Edwards is out for the season after tearing her (left) ACL and lateral meniscus against Long Island on Dec. 20. Edwards underwent reconstructive surgery on Dec. 26. She will not be eligible to utilize 1997-98 as a redshirt year, as she had played in six minutes of her seventh game when the injury occurred.

Freshman Leaf Newman notched a career-high 18 points against WSU. |
JAN. 10 VS. WSU: Two days after serving a one-game suspension, senior forward Stephanie Freeman scored a career-high 25 points to lead ASU to an 80-60 victory over Washington State Jan. 10 in the UAC.
The Cougars, who trailed 46-25 at the intermission, outscored ASU 36-35 in the second stanza. But Washington State never came closer than 20 points in the final 20 minutes. The Sun Devils took their biggest lead (31 points) on a layup by freshman Kellie McDanal (Conifer, Colo.) with 4:48 remaining.
Washington State trailed by just four six minutes into the game, but a 12-4 ASU run put the Sun Devils ahead 24-12 with 8:10 left in the first period. Freeman added seven points in the run. Freshman guard Leaf Newman then added back-to-back three-pointers and the Sun Devils were out front 30-14.
Newman finished with a career-high 18 points and career-high equaling seven rebounds. Freeman added a game-high tying seven boards and finished 9-of-16 from the field. Junior guards Michelle Tom and Rechelle Lang each contributed six assists.
Jennifer Kerns finished with 16 points to pace the Cougars, and Alke Dietel grabbed a game-high tying seven rebounds. Washington State committed 30 turnovers to ASU's 23. The Cougars shot 35.0 percent to the Sun Devils' 41.5. The squads were near even on the boards, as ASU posted 43 rebounds to WSU's 42.
JAN. 8 VS. UW: Junior Michelle Tom drained two three-pointers in the final 10 seconds, including the last-second shot, to lift ASU to a 77-76 victory over seventh-ranked Washington on Jan. 8 in the UAC.
The loss was the first for Washington on the year.
UW's Jill Pimley made two free throws to give the Huskies a 75-71 edge with 24 seconds on the clock. Tom then hit a three-pointer and Washington junior Jamie Redd missed the first of two free throws at the 0:05-mark, cutting the deficit to two points (76-74). Tom's trey swished through the net as the buzzer sounded, giving ASU its biggest upset in school history.
Washington led by as many as 12 points in the second half, taking charge 45-33 with 16 minutes to play. But an 18-6 ASU run, keyed by seven points from both Tom and junior Kisha White evened the score at 51 with 10:32 left. The Sun Devils stretched their lead to six points on a three-pointer by sophomore forward Kristine Sand with less than six minutes to go.
Earning her first start, Tom paced ASU with 19 points, six rebounds and five assists. Three other Sun Devils reached double figures in scoring: sophomore Rachel Holt with 13, Sand with 11 and senior Rameeka Lowe with 10. Holt grabbed a team-high 10 boards for her second double-double on the year.
Junior Rechelle Lang contributed a game-high eight assists. Washington's Amber Hall finished with 20 points and a career-high 21 rebounds. Redd added a game-high 24 points.
Arizona State shot 42.4 percent from the field (25-of-59) to Washington's 36.6 percent (30-of-82), and the Sun Devils were 7-of-16 (43.8 percent) from three-point range.

TEMPE TURNAROUND: After just 41 games at the helm of the ASU women's basketball team, Head Coach Charli Turner Thorne has the Sun Devils heading in an opposite direction from when she took the reigns in June of 1996. ASU had not recorded more than eight wins in a season for three straight years before she arrived in Tempe. Since then Turner Thorne has the Sun Devils back on track from where they left off in 1992-93, the school's last winning season (17-10 overall, 10-8/T4th Pac-10).
In 1997-98 Turner Thorne has guided ASU to:- Its best Pac-10 start (2-2) since the 1992-93 season.
- Its largest margin of victory in a Pac-10 game (+20) since 1992-93 (Saturday, Jan. 10, in an 80-60 win over Washington State).
- Its first back-to-back conference wins since 1995-96 (ASU beat then-No. 7 Washington on Jan. 8 before downing the Cougars on Jan. 10).
- Its biggest upset ever, with the 77-76 win over then-No. 7 Washington Jan. 8.
- Coached ASU to its most victories (9) since winning 17 games in 1992-93.
AT THE LINE: ASU posts a league-leading 69.9 free-throw percentage (204-of-292), with six players connecting on at least 71.0 percent of their free throws: Freeman, Newman, White, Lowe, Lang and Tom. Junior Rachel Holt has been near perfect of late, going 13-of-15 from the charity stripe in ASU's last four games. The Sun Devils have also benefited from the line since Michelle Tom became eligible (Dec. 20); the 5-8 junior is shooting 84.6 percent (22-of-26) from the charity stripe.
LINEUP CARD ADDITION: Junior point guard Michelle Tom's impact on the Sun Devil offense (since she became eligible on Dec. 20) has been immeasurable. The 5-8 Winslow, Ariz., native is averaging a team third-best 9.9 points through seven games (11.3 points in Pac-10 games). Whether she's backing up or playing alongside starter Rechelle Lang, Tom's presence is providing extra direction and allowing shooting guard Rameeka Lowe to stay out on the wing. A transfer from Central Florida at mid-season a year ago, Tom is a cousin of former ASU standout Ryneldi Becenti, a two-time honorable mention All-American who directed the Sun Devils to the NCAA Tournament in 1992.
FROM WALKON TO STARTER: Junior forward Kisha White, a walkon from Phoenix, Ariz. (South Mountain HS), earned herself a spot among ASU's starting five back on Dec. 20. An injury to freshman Jennifer Bennett opened the door for White, who has come on strong to post three double-figure scoring efforts in her seven games as a starter (18 pts. 12/20 vs. Long Island; 16 pts. 12/29 vs. Oklahoma; 10 points 1/2 vs. USC). Coming in off the bench, she posted a 12-point effort versus Dayton and has grabbed five boards three times (vs. Long Island, vs. Marquette, vs. USC). White was named to the ASU Wells Fargo Classic All-Tournament Team on Dec. 21.
TURNOVER TALES: In back-to-back games versus USC and UCLA on Jan. 2 and 4, ASU committed more than 30 turnovers (34 vs. USC, 32 vs. UCLA). Conversely, the Sun Devils turned the ball over just 15 times on Dec. 21 vs. Auburn, the least number of turnovers committed by Sun Devils under Coach Charli Turner Thorne. ASU has posted less than 20 turnovers four other times in Turner Thorne's tenure, with 16 against New Mexico on Dec. 11, 1996.

ASU IS UNDEFEATED WHEN: Arizona State is 4-0 on the season when outrebounding its opponent and posts a 5-0 slate when leading at the intermission.
HOLT EMERGES AS A FORCE: In ASU's last eight games, sophomore Rachel Holt (Buckeye, Ariz.), the Sun Devils' 6-foot-3 starting center, has averaged 12.5 points (on 40-of-68 shooting -- 58.8%) and 6.2 rebounds. Holt's numbers of late are the opposite of those from her first five games, where she averaged just 6.8 points and 3.8 rebounds.
WHO ARE THOSE GUYS?: Nine newcomers don the maroon and gold for the first time this year, almost outnumbering the returning letterwinners (5) two to one. The nine new faces are the most on an ASU team since the Pac-10 began sponsoring women's basketball in 1986-87.
DEVILS SURPASS CENTURY MARK: The Sun Devils recorded their third win in record-setting fashion, (with five players tallying career- or season-high point totals) in an opening-round 118-56 victory over Long Island in the Wells Fargo Classic. The 118-point effort marked the first time an ASU women's team has reached the century mark since the 1992-93 season. That squad posted a 119-72 win over Marquette (also in ASU's tournament). The offensive output also ties as the second-most points ever by Sun Devil women, and was just three points off of the UAC record (121 points by the ASU men during the 1988-89 season).
FREEMAN MAKES ALL-TOURNEY TEAM: In ASU's two games at the Southwestern Bell/Cotton Bowl Classic, SR F Stephanie Freeman went 11-of-25 (44.4%), shot 55.6 percent (5-for-9) from beyond the arc, was 10-of-12 (83.3%) from the free-throw line, and averaged 18.5 points, 3.0 rebounds and 5.5 steals, landing herself on the inaugural event's all-tournament squad.
SENIOR LEADERSHIP DEFINED: SR F Stephanie Freeman (Austin, Texas), ASU's sole three-year letterwinner, continues to lead the squad offensively with 14.9 points per game. Freeman has paced the Sun Devils in scoring in seven games, tying FR G Ebony Edwards with a team-high 18 points vs. UCSB. She notched her career high of 25 points Jan. 10 versus Washington State. Freeman also leads the squad in steals (2.8spg). She has nine double-figure scoring games on the year.

STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE: Four of ASU's 1997-98 opponents were ranked in the Jan. 5 Associated Press Top 25, and three more received at least one vote. Pac-10 rivals Washington (7th), Arizona (10th) and Stanford (14th) are rated in the top-15, and the Sun Devils met No. 18 Auburn in the Wells Fargo Classic. In addition, UCLA, Marquette and New Mexico received votes.
DOUBLE TROUBLE: SO C Rachel Holt (Buckeye, Ariz.) posted her second double-double this season (and second of her career) against No. 7 Washington on Jan. 8 Holt finished with 13 points and 10 boards vs. the Huskies. Her first double-double came in just 23 minutes of action Dec. 20 against Long Island, pouring in 24 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. SR G Rameeka Lowe (Seattle, Wash.) posted her first double-double vs. UCSB, but did so "the other way." Lowe finished with 10 points and a career-high 10 assists. Six of her points came from beyond the arc, as she went 2-for-2 from three-point range.
DID YOU KNOW?: This year's Sun Devil lineup features just 6 1/2 years of Division I experience. And just one of those players (Stephanie Freeman) averaged more than 14 minutes a game last year. Here's the breakdown:
SR Stephanie Freeman -- 3 yrs.
SO Rachel Holt -- 1 yr.
SO Kristine Sand -- 1 yr.
SR Spring Steed -- 1 yr.
SR Rameeka Lowe -- 1/2 yr.
= 6 1/2 yrs.
ON THE TUBE: The Sun Devils will appear on television at least 12 times (with the opportunity for more exposures) in 1997-98, a record for the program and second in the Pac-10:

HEAD COACH CHARLI TURNER THORNE: Turner Thorne (Stanford '88), who enters her second year as the Sun Devil mentor, arrived at ASU after a three-year stint as head coach at Northern Arizona University. Turner Thorne's ASU record is 15-26 (.366/2 years) and her career record stands at 56-65 (.463/5 years). She guided ASU to its biggest upset ever, beating No. 7 Washington on Jan. 8, 1998, and led ASU to its most wins (9) since the 1992-93 season last year. At NAU, she took the Lumberjacks to consecutive winning seasons in 1994-95 and 1995-96, the first coach in NAU history to accomplish that feat. Turner Thorne was 40-40 overall in her three years in Flagstaff. She previously worked as an assistant at Santa Clara and Washington. Turner Thorne, who signed a four-year contract with ASU in 1996, is assisted by Mark Lewis (Southern Mississippi '82), Laura Hughes (Santa Clara '92) and Erika Hardwick (Washington '93).
