TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State's Rachel Holt notched a career-high 24 points and a career-high 11 rebounds to lead the Sun Devils (3-4, 0-0 Pac-10) to a 118-56 victory over Long Island (1-6) Saturday at the University Activity Center in the first game of the Wells Fargo Classic. This was Holt's first career double-double.
The Sun Devils' 118 points was one point below their most points in a game, which was 119 on Dec. 5, 1992, versus Marquette, also in the Wells Fargo Classic. The most points scored in the University Activity Center is 121 scored by the ASU Men's team during the 1988-89 season.
"We stayed aggressive offensively," said ASU coach Charli Turner Thorne. "We played strong, and our all of starters are starting to gel."
Sun Devil guard Rameeka Lowe recorded a career-high eight steals, and guard Rechelle Lang posted a career-high nine assists for ASU. Forward Kisha White, making her first start for the Sun Devils, added a career-high 18 points (on 7-of-10 shooting) to the ASU victory.
The Sun Devils took control early in the first half, and never lost the lead. A 14-0 run late in the first half led the Sun Devils to a 57-26 advantage going into the break. The Sun Devils have not scored more than 36 points in the first half this season.
ASU led by at least 30 points throughout the entire second half, which was capped by a 13-0 run.
The ASU women shot 21-of-41 from the floor. Their .512 shooting percentage topped their season average of .373. The Sun Devils had 27 steals compared to Long Island's 14, and the Blackbirds' 40 turnovers topped ASU's 29.
The Sun Devils are back in action Sunday at 7 p.m. in the championship game of the Wells Fargo Classic where they will take on the winner of the Auburn-UNC Wilmington contest.
