TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State senior Valerie Williams was named the Pac-10 Women's Field Athlete of the Week for the week of May 1-7, the conference announced today.
Williams, a senior from Frederick, Md., turned in a career day at ASU's double dual meet with Arizona and Northern Arizona Saturday, May 5, posting double wins in the long jump and triple jump. Williams won the long jump with a personal-best leap and NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 21 feet, 2.5 inches, the third-best mark in Sun Devil history.
She also won the triple jump with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 42 feet, 0.75 inches, an ASU season-best effort. Williams, who transferred to ASU from Kentucky after her sophomore season, is the school-record holder in the outdoor (42-1.5) and indoor (41-0.5) triple jump. During the 2000 indoor season, Williams earned All-America honors in the long jump with a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Championships (20-10.5).
