Volleyball Polishes Off '98 Season

The Arizona State Sun Devils (10-13, 7-9 Pac-10) close out the 1998 season at home with Washington State (11-11, 8-8) on Friday, November 20 at 7 p.m. and Washington (7-13, 6-10 Pac-10) on Sunday, November 22 at 1 p.m. in the Wells Fargo Arena.

ABOUT WASHINGTON STATE The Cougars enter this weekend's matches with a 11-11 record, 8-8 in conference play ... they are coached by Cindy Fredrick (Augustana '74) ... last week WSU dropped both matches to USC (0-3) and UCLA (1-3) ... The Cougars lead the all-time series with the Sun Devils, 13-12 ... earlier this season, WSU defeated ASU, 3-1, in Pullman, Wash. ... Jennifer Stinson leads the ''Cougs, averaging 4.15 kills per game ... Stinson and teammate Alicia Erickson are averaging 1.45 and 1.22 blocks per game respectively ... ASU is 0-5 in its last five meetings with WSU ... ASU's last win vs. Washington State came in 1994 on Nov. 4 (3-0).

ABOUT WASHINGTON The Huskies enter this weekend's matches with a 7-13 record, 6-10 in Pac-10 play ... they are coached by Bill Neville (George Williams '67) ... last week they fell to both UCLA (1-3) and USC (0-3) ... the Huskies lead the all-time series with ASU 17-12 ... the two teams met earlier this seaosn with ASU winning 3-2 in Seattle, Wash ... UW is led by Kristina Laffling (4.24 kills per game) and Leslie Tuiasosopo (3.59 kpg) ... ASU is 2-3 in its last five matches with the Huskies.

NOTING THE DEVILS ASU's Amanda Burbridge is ranked fourth in the conference in kills per game (4.68 kpg) ... Jolynn Faatulu ranks sixth in the conference in assists per game (12.32 apg) ... freshman Jami Coughlin is first in the conference in digs per game (3.62 dpg) ... senior Shawna Vanley ranks seventh in blocks per game (1.39 bpg) ... as a team ASU ranks third in digs per game (15.33 dpg) ... ASU is 2-0 in televised matches ... ASU's seven conference wins in 1998 is the most since 1995 when they won 11.

FAATULU CLOSING IN ON FOURTH ALL-TIME IN ASSISTS Junior Jolynn Faatulu ranks fifth in career assists at ASU with 2,611 and need just 87 assists in the last two matches to move into fourth on the all-time charts. The 5-9 setter from Long Beach, California will captain the '98 squad along with junior Jamie Peck. Faatulu is currently averaging 12.32 assists and 2.70 digs per game. She is a two-time all-tourney selection in '98. Faatulu became only the sixth setter in ASU history to reach 2,000 assists . Faatulu's 74 assists vs. Washington (9/18) ranks fifth all-time at ASU for single-match assists. Among active career assists leaders in the conference, Faatulu ranks second. She ranks 10th among active career dig leaders in the loop with 537.

COUGHLIN SETS FROSH MARK FOR DIGS IN A SEASON Jami Coughlin shattered the single-season freshman record for digs over the weekend, formerly held by Christy Nore (309 digs in 1985). She currently has 326 digs this season with two matches remaining. The Arizona native is leading the squad and Pac-10 in digs with 3.60 per game and is second in kills averaging 3.14 per game. She set a freshman school record for most digs with 25 vs. Bradley (9/11). Her 24 kills vs. George Washington (9/4) were three shy of the freshman kills record set by Valentina Vega in 1982. Coughlin leads the squad with 21 service aces.

BURBRIDGE RECORDS FIRST CAREER TRIPLE-DOUBLE Sophomore outside hitter Amanda Burbridgerecorded her first triple-double with 23 kills, 19 digs and 10 blocks in a 2-3 loss to Arizona over the weekend. Through 21 matches, Burbridge, a '97 Pac-10 All-Freshman selection, is averaging 4.68 kills per game and 2.64 digs. She has notched double digits in kills in 21 of 23 matches this season and is hitting .207 on the year. Burbridge notched a career-high 34 kills vs. Washington (9/18). Her kill total was one-shy of ASU's all-time single-match kills record set by Lisa Stuck in 1982. Burbridge reached the 400 kills mark vs. the 'Cats as well and now has 421 on the season. ASU has had seven consecutive seasons with a player over 400 kills dating back to 1992.

HOMEGROWN TALENT Head coach Patti Snyder-Park doesn't have to look far to find some of the top talent in the volleyball community. It's right in her backyard. Nine out of 14 players on the 1998 Sun Devil squad hail from the state of Arizona. Seven of the nine are from the Phoenix area. Five of the six starters call the Grand Canyon state home.
