ASU Track and Field 1997 Season Review

Men

Men's Track and Field (Greg Kraft/1st Year): Did not compete in postseason...went 0-3 in outdoor dual meets and 0-2 in indoor duals... Finished tied for 11th at MPSF Championships in Reno...junior Mika Laiho, a second-team Pac-10 All-Academic pick, broke his own school record in the hammer throw with a toss of 229-2 at the ASU Invitational...that throw was second-best in the Pac-10 and fourth-best in the country at the time... he was named Pac-10 Men's Field Athlete of the Week for his effort... Laiho was runner-up in the event at the Drake Relays... junior Jared Schreiber, a first-team Pac-10 All-Academic pick, threw 198-7 in the javelin at the ASU Invite, eighth-best all-time at ASU... the distance medley relay team placed fifth at the Drake Relays... junior Ari Rodriguez took third in the 1500m (3:48.52) at the Sun Angel Classic... he also ran a personal-best 1:50.73 800m in Long Beach... senior Reggie Charlton ran a 51.73 400mH, just missing ASU's all-time top-10 list...that time was third-best in the Pac-10... junior Jeremy Staat was fourth in the shot put (58-6 3/4) at the MPSF Championships... Lindsey McDonald's 10.57 100m was seventh-best in the conference... junior Ryan Hort was a second-team Pac-10 All-Academic pick... senior Travis Anderson and junior Ari Rodriguez were honorable mention Pac-10 All-Academic picks.

Women

Women's Track and Field/Outdoor (Greg Kraft/1st Year): Did not compete in postseason... went 1-2 in outdoor dual meets and 0-2 in indoor dual meets... finished 10th at the MPSF Championships in Reno... upset then-14th ranked Northern Arizona 85-74 at annual outdoor dual... sophomore All-America Fiona Daly, a honorable mention Pac-10 All-Academic pick, nailed a provisional qualifying 5-10 in the high jump at the Sun Angel Classic... Daly also took runner-up honors at the MPSF meet... senior Karen Vigilant ran a provisional qualifying 59.52 400mH at the Mt. SAC Relays... that time was fifth-best in the conference and sixth on ASU's all-time outdoor list... sophomore Dawnyell Linder ran a 11.69 100m at the Long Beach Invite, good for second-best in the Pac-10... Linder swept the 100 and 200m at the Arizona/NAU outdoor dual... Joronda White's 54.78 400m at the Sun Angel was seventh-best in the league... Charity Amama won the javelin at the ASU Invite with a career-best throw of 155-10, fifth in the conference and fourth all-time at ASU... the Sun Devils' 4x400m relay team was second at the MPSF meet... junior Alison Had, sophomore Chastity Walker and redshirt freshmen Erica Larson and Erika Johnson were honorable mention Pac-10 All-Academic picks.
