Opening statement…
“Brady White will be out for the year and we are working to get everyone else healthy for the game. I am really proud of our team, especially guys like Armand Perry who showed incredible heart and toughness. Gump, Mo and Marcus Ball also stepped up and did some really great things. I was proud of Zane and what he was able to accomplish in that game. We are looking forward to working hard, getting on the road and finding a way to get another win.”
On this week’s quarterback situation…
“We think we have a good chance to have Manny back and he is working really hard towards that. We are getting Dillon ready and we have also been working with Jack (Smith) and Coltin Gerhart for depth purposes. It’s unlikely that Bryce will come back this year and of course, Brady’s deal is season ending. My heart goes out to him because he did a great job for us this week. The good news is that Manny’s injury was only a minor deal and I think he has a good chance of him coming back this week.”
On digging deep into the quarterback depth chart…
“Quarterback is such an important position, you really have to adapt to the skills and talents of the different players. Last week, we didn’t have our starting quarterback and we still won. We are a team and it isn’t about one person, two people or three people. That’s the game of football and the game of football mirrors life. You get knocked down sometimes and you’re going to have injuries. When you have weeks without many people, you need others to step up and that’s why I love the game of football. We are playing a very explosive football team this week, so it’s going to be a challenge. Mike is a guy I have tremendous respect for, the guy is an incredible football coach. Their whole staff does a great job. This team is capable of big plays and they have been playing very well at home. So, we need to go out there and find a way to win.”
On teams stacking up against the run game…
“Obviously, we want to be able to run the football and that is something we are committed to do. Each year, the team who is going to win this league is the team that can effectively stop the run. If you don’t let people run the football, it can really help stop a scoring offense. After looking at the film, we played a really good defensive football team and we were able to win. So, it is important for us not to run a one-dimensional offense.”
On the relationship with Mike Macintyre…
“Well he’s a coachable kid. You can tell when you get around people, what kind of person that he is, just talking football with him and being around him. We always gravitate towards certain people when you go to meetings and things like that and he’s just a guy that really, really impresses me. He impressed me when he was at San Jose and what he did there. I remember a game they played at Stanford and they almost won. I mean we played them, we’ve been fortunate enough to win but it’s been a challenge. He’s done a lot to get those guys going. I think he’s a guy that gets his team to play at a high level.”
On the defensive changes against UCLA…
“I felt they did a great job. Even though there were some plays we’d like to eliminate I thought there were some nice tackles. I thought we did some nice things there. We got take aways and did the things we needed to do. I think we’re trying to find that balance. I think Marcus (Ball) played great, Gump (Hayes) played outstanding, I thought Mo for his first game did a great job. As well as Bryson Echols did a great job coming off the bench. We lost Kareem in the first quarter and then in the fourth, Gump was cramping or feeling sick so we lost him. We had some guys that had to step up. Robbie (Robinson) has been playing well for us all year starting in that nickel-package. Getting his first interception I was really proud of him and I was really proud of Tashon, he did some nice things there. I thought Renell Wren played his best football game since he’s been here. He can be dominant and just needs to continue to get better.”
On the team finding ways to win…
“These guys, I said that in the beginning of the year how much I enjoy being in our fifth year and just the culture. We love going out to practice every day and I think our guys have shown that. You can talk about it, but our guys have shown it. They show great heart, coming from behind in games during the season, they, obviously, responded last week after not playing so well in a disappointing game the week before. I am really proud of them. I am really proud of the heart and determination they play with and I think that’s a product of the culture that we’ve developed over the last five years.”
On what has changed at Colorado to make them one of the best teams in the country…
“I think what they’re doing offensively. One, I think they’re playing extremely hard and I think the guy they are playing now have been playing for three years so they were really, really young. They have great speed at wide receiver, great speed, I mean these guys are legit. They have three receivers that are legitimate playmakers. They have, their tailback, they want to run the football they’re balanced there. They have two quarterbacks who are playing well as well. And then the difference in their team is how they play defense. They’re attacking on defense, and they’re playing with a lot of emotion. Obviously, they’ve improved tremendously and there isn’t anything that resembles anything that I’ve seen last year and that tells you that they’ve developed their players and they’re a football team that’s playing very hungry. That’s what I see.”
On Demario Richard…
“He’s a guy that when he first started playing for us I mentioned all the time and then you sort of just expect him to do it every week and he does it every week. Just very proud, he made some incredible runs, he makes things happen. Great heart, great determination, great patience. I like his demeanor. When we’ve had times of adversity, he’s shown up and he’s shown up with a positive attitude and he’s a guy that is a warrior at running back, he’s really been consistent and I’m really pleased with how he’s developed. He’s a guy that I don’t mention that much that I should probably mention more but it’s very stabling having a running back like him that’s running the ball the way he is.”
