JAN. 9, 2008: FRESHMAN JAMES HARDEN EXPLODES IN OVERTIME WIN AGAINST RIVAL ARIZONA
In his first career meeting with Arizona, freshman James Harden helped carry the Sun Devils to the 64-59 overtime victory and ended a 12-game losing streak to the Wildcats. Harden led all scorers with 26 points, 22 of which came in the second half and overtime. The Devils were held to only four points in the first seven minutes, but the resilient group battled back in front of a rowdy sellout crowd at Wells Fargo Arena. Harden’s free throw in overtime gave the Devils the 56-55 lead, their first since the early minutes of the game. As Harden took over, the Sun Devils never let that lead go, earning their ninth straight win and a 3-0 record in the Pac-10 for the third time in school history.

JAN. 17, 2009: HARDEN AND NO. 16 ASU TOPPLE NO. 9 BRUINS IN OT AT PAULEY PAVILION
The No. 16 Sun Devils locked up defensively to upset the ninth ranked UCLA Bruins on their own floor in a 61-58 overtime thriller. After a sloppy outing against USC two days earlier, guard James Harden shined with a game leading 24 points, while forward Jeff Pendegraph’s 18 points helped the Devils rally back from an 11-point second-half deficit. The story of the night however was the ASU defense which held the No. 9 Bruins to only one field goal in a 13-minute stretch to end regulation and start overtime. The win snapped multiple UCLA win streaks including a 10-game season win streak, a 15-game home win streak, and an eight game win streak against the Sun Devils. The win also marked the sixth time in school history that the Devils defeated a top-ten team on the road, the first since 1998.

----------
FEB. 5, 2009: HARDEN GOES OFF FOR 36 IN WIN OVER OREGON
James Harden continued his stellar sophomore season with a 36 point explosion in Arizona State’s 66-57 win over Oregon. The Devils handed the Ducks their tenth Pac-10 loss keeping them winless in conference play, their worst start since 1992-1993. Harden, the conference’s scoring leader with 21.9 points per game, recorded his fifth 30+ point game of the season. His 36 against the Ducks was his highest scoring performance in conference play. After a slow, 3 of 9 start from the field, Harden found his rhythm hitting eight of his last 11 shots and went 5 of 10 from three point range. In a tight first half that included 12 lead changes, the Devils scored the final five points to take a 32-27 lead into the break. Harden wasted no time coming out of the half hitting two 3-pointers as the Devils went on an 8-0 scoring run stretching the lead to 40-27. Despite inching as close as 49-42 with just under nine minutes in the second half, Oregon could not compete with Harden’s 23 second-half points and the Sun Devils pulled away to ice the Ducks.

FEB. 7, 2015: BO BARNES AND THE SUN DEVILS UPSET NO. 6 ARIZONA IN TEMPE
After a lopsided loss to the Wildcats in January, the Arizona State Sun Devils inched away from their sixth-ranked rival for a 81-78 win. With the win the Devils split the season series with Arizona, but for the second consecutive year took down the Wildcats in Wells Fargo Arena. The Sun Devil offense dominated one of the nation’s best defensive teams in all sorts of ways, shooting 7 of 15 from three point range, 22 of 28 from the free throw line, and over 50 percent from the field overall. Freshman guard Tra Holder went for 15 points and eight assists, and forward Savon Goodman added 15 points on 7 of 9 shooting with nine rebounds. But it was guard Bo Barnes, the Scottsdale native, who led all Sun Devils in scoring with 18 points off the bench. The season split with the Wildcats meant the Devils held a slight 9-8 edge in the rivalry since the 2007-08 season.

FEB. 12, 2016: HOLDER, GOODMAN, AND BLAKES HELP PUSH THE SUN DEVILS TO UPSET OVER NO.23 USC

The Sun Devils’ second straight conference win came in upset fashion when Arizona State upended USC 74-67 in Tempe. It was business as usual for the Trojans in the first half shooting 58 percent from the field while holding ASU to only 33 percent shooting. But after going into halftime trailing 30-27, the Devils came out firing in the second half sprinting away on a 10-2 run. The Sun Devils kept on firing, stretching their second half lead to nine at one point before the Trojans cut it to three with just under five minutes to play. In response, ASU went on a 9-3 scoring run to put away any doubt. Tra Holder’s 20 points, Savon Goodman’s 17, and Gerry Blakes’ 14 all headlined the ASU offense. But the defense had an equally impressive outing forcing 17 Trojan turnovers and holding USC 18 points below its conference play scoring average.

FEB. 14, 2008: HARDEN LEADS LATE SURGE IN OVERTIME STUNNER AGAINST NO. 7 STANFORD

It was not looking great when the Sun Devils trailed No. 7 Stanford by 14 with just under eight minutes to play. But for the second time in a week Arizona State was able to rally back, this time to upset the Cardinal 72-68 in overtime. The Devils came out hot, never trailing in the first half. They never led by less than four, sometimes stretching their lead out as far as ten. The momentum carried into the second half when ASU started things off with an 8-0 run. James Harden led the way with 23 points, scoring the last four points of regulation to force overtime.

FEB. 14, 2014: SUN DEVILS SHOCK NO. 2 ARIZONA WITH DOUBLE OT UPSET WIN

The fans in Tempe had lots to love when the Sun Devils took down the No. 2 Arizona Wildcats 69-66 in double overtime on Valentine’s Day. After the Wildcats handled ASU in January, the Devils went on quite the roll winning five of six leading up to the rivalry matchup. Jermaine Marshall’s eight points in double overtime capped off a 29 point performance that led all scorers. His offense was keeping the Devils afloat in the first half, scoring 12 of ASU’s 19 points in the first twenty minutes. But despite the inconsistent offense and rebounding struggles, the Sun Devil defense stepped up in a big way. Holding the second ranked team in the nation under their season scoring average, the Devils forced 15 turnovers, snagged seven steals, and swatted nine shots. Center Jordan Bachynski was dominant in the middle accounting for eight of the Devils’ nine blocked shots. But without doubt, the biggest of Bachynski’s eight blocks was when he rejected Arizona guard T.J. McConnell’s attempted game winner. After Jahii Carson picked up the ball and dunked it to push ASU up 69-66, fans stormed the court only to find 0.6 seconds still remaining on the clock. But once the Wildcats could not get off a clean shot and the buzzer sounded, the fans were right back celebrating the victory at midcourt.

FEB. 18, 2015: JAMES HARDEN’S JERSEY IS RETIRED AT WELLS FARGO ARENA

The Sun Devil faithful welcomed back one of the most decorated basketball players in the program’s history when James Harden had his jersey retired during a matchup with UCLA in Tempe. From Harden’s arrival to Tempe in 2007, he quickly became one of the most lethal players in the Pac-10. Averaging 19.0 points per game over his two year college career, Harden was named first team all Pac-10 in 2008 and 2009, became the third Sun Devil ever to earn the Pac-10 player of the year honor, and was the first in the program’s history to be named a consensus first team All-American. Harden also was just the fifth player in the history of the Pac-10 to lead the conference in both scoring (20.1 points per game) and steals (1.69 per game) as a sophomore in 2008-2009. Harden’s impact on the team was undeniable as well, leading the Devils to back-to-back 20 win seasons for the first time in almost three decades, and a five game win streak against the rival Arizona Wildcats, the first such streak since the Devils won nine straight from 1979-1983. Harden’s #13 jersey became the seventh Sun Devil number retired to the rafters of Wells Fargo Arena.

After dropping the first matchup in Tempe, Arizona State defeated the Arizona Wildcats 73-69 in Tucson to stay hot and split the season series. The four point victory was the Devils’ third straight win and the fifth in the last six games. In the nine matchups with Arizona under head coach Herb Sendek, the Devils have posted a 6-3 mark and held the Wildcats to only 62.4 points per game after a nearly 20 year stretch where the Wildcats went 34-5 against ASU averaging 86.6 points per game. ASU guard Ty Abbott dropped 28 points, only two shy of his career high, while the Devils shot 67 percent from the field as a team in the second half. The win was the Devils’ third straight in Tucson, a feat not seen since 1983.

A major highlight included a career high 40 point outing in November against UTEP. Harden also became the third sophomore in the conference’s history to earn the honor.

Harden did a little bit of everything scoring 24 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field including 3-of-5 from behind the three, and added nine rebounds and four assists to his statline, and yet he still had help.
