T&F?s Tibbs Breaks Record, Men Places 2nd At New Mexico Invite

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—Arizona State track and field’s sophomore Keyasia Tibbs set both a personal best and school record in the triple jump with her best of 12.56m (41-2.50), while the men’s team finished in second with 72 points on Saturday at the New Mexico Team Invite at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

“It was a very solid outing for us, particularly after the slow start yesterday with some issues at the airport that led to our teams not making it to New Mexico until late last night,” Director of Track and Field Greg Kraft said. “It had been a long day, and we had a great start today with the high jump. Bryan McBride had a great opener, and Edmond Baker did well with his PR.”

Tibbs’ jump moves her past the previous school record, set in 2000 by Valerie Williams when she jumped 12.51m (41-0.50).

On the men’s side of the triple jump, junior Josh Dixon made his 2015 debut with a personal best at 15.52m (50-0.50), good for third, while redshirt senior Bryan McBride followed at 14.99m (49-2.25), for fifth.

In the 60m dash, redshirt senior Devan Spann set a personal best at 6.66, good for second, while on the women’s side, junior Jasmine Gibbs took fifth in the finals with a season best at 7.48.

Senior Cameron Taylor won the 60m hurdles competition with a personal best at 7.80.

The Sun Devil women also picked up a win in the 4x400m relay, with the team of senior Sara McDonald, sophomore LaTroya Franklin, freshman Melese Crozier, and senior Brianna Tate edging out Kansas State’s team at 3:35.43 to 3:35.62.

Tate also won the 400m dash with a time of 53.75, while Crozier placed sixth with a personal best of 55.18, and McDonald followed in seventh at 55.21. Junior Kiera Bulluck also set a personal best with her time of 58.02.

Both redshirt freshman Magdalyn Ewen and redshirt sophomore Ashley Weber set personal bests in the weight throw, Ewen throwing 19.92m (65-4.25) for third place and Weber throwing 18.67m (61-3.00) for fifth.

Ewen and redshirt senior Alex Hartig also set personal bests in the shot put, with Ewen placing fourth with her throw of 15.64m (51-2.75) and Hartig taking fifth at 15.58m (51-1.50).

On the men’s side of the throws, redshirt senior Kyle Lillie took second in the weight with a personal best of 18.80m (61-8.25), while fellow redshirt senior Ryan Leslie placed sixth with a throw of 17.81m (58-5.25), and redshirt sophomore Kyle Long also set a personal best as he threw 17.41m (57-1.50).

In the shot put, redshirt sophomore Thomas Anderson took second at 18.30m (60-0.50), while junior Ahmed Hassan followed in fifth at 17.23m (56-6.50). Lillie placed seventh at 16.82m (55-2.25), while Long placed 10th at 15.84m (51-11.75).

Franklin also set a personal best as she finished second in the 200m dash at 24.00, while redshirt senior Paisley Pettway placed sixth in the women’s 800m run at 2:15.73, and junior Nicole Kennedy set a new personal best in the pole vault with her clearance at 3.88m (12-8.75).

In the men’s pole vault, senior Josiah Becker placed fourth with a personal best clearance of 4.97m (16-3.50), with redshirt junior Tanner Greely following in eighth at 4.82m (15-9.75), while junior Jacob Flores placed 10th with a clearance at the same height.

McBride placed third in his 2015 opener in the high jump at 2.16m (7-1.00), while senior Edmond Baker set an indoor personal best with his clearance of 2.11m (6-11.00) for sixth.

UCLA swept the team competition, with 93 points on the women’s side and 74 points on the men’s.

“We had two big PRs in the weight throw with Ashley Weber and Magdalyn Ewen, and that really put the start to our day on a positive note,” Kraft said. “I was pleased by the way our team competed overall, a lot of highlights from start to finish, and ending the day with a win in the women’s mile relay was also great. Throughout the day we had good performances at pole vault, triple jump, a solid 60m from Devan Spann, Brianna Tate had an outstanding day, another PR for Cameron Taylor, so when you look overall it was a good weekend for the Sun Devils.”

Up next, the Sun Devils will have a week off before embarking on its first split weekend of the season, with the distance squad heading to Seattle, Wash., for the Husky Classic, while the rest of the team returns to Albuquerque for the Don Kirby Elite Invitational. Both events are set for Feb 13-14.

Quotes:
Sophomore Keyasia Tibbs
“I think I did really well today. I jumped a personal best twice in the finals, and it was very needed and very wanted. I’ve been waiting to jump over 40 feet for a long time. I know there’s room for improvement, I kept missing the board a little, so I’m looking forward to taking what I learned today to the rest of the season.”

Redshirt Senior Devan Spann
“Today went pretty well as far as my times, but as far as how I executed the races, I have a few things to work on. I set a PR today, which helps me move up the rankings and get closer to qualifying for NCAAs, but hopefully in a couple weeks I can perfect my execution and recover a little more from the last few weeks.
