WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Arizona State center Sybil Dosty was named the 2009 Toyo Tires Pac-10 Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced. The award, which is presented in the 22 sports the Conference sponsors, was established to honor collegiate student-athletes that are standouts both academically and in their sports discipline.
A senior in eligibility, Dosty is working towards her Master's degree in liberal arts, earning a 4.05 grade point average. She graduated in May of 2008, earning her undegraduate degree in interdisciplinary studies. Helping the 16th-ranked Sun Devils to a 15-3 record, 23-8 overall and a tie for second place in the Pac-10 standings, she ranks sixth in the Conference in rebounding, averaging 7.0 rpg. A transfer from the University of Tennessee, she has started in the team's 30 games, ranking third in the league with a .548 field goal percentage.
Eligible student-athletes include seniors on track to receive a degree with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher who have been at their institution for more than a year and participate in at least 50% of the scheduled contests in their particular sport.
Scholar-Athletes of the Year in each sport will receive a commemorative award. Toyo® will donate $1,000 to the scholarship funds of the institution's athletic department of each winner in recognition of their accomplishments.
The Pac-10 Conference, in cooperation with Pac-10 corporate partner Toyo Tires, established the "Pac-10 Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards, presented by Toyo Tires" during the 2008-09 academic year.
