THIS WEEK: The Arizona State men's swimming and diving team, winner in three of its last five dual meets, heads to the state of Utah for a pair of dual meets versus Brigham Young and Utah. The Devils start their trip with a February 5 dual meet versus the Cougars then journey to Salt Lake City the following day for meet versus Utah.
LAST WEEK: The Arizona State swimming and diving team had a good weekend as the men's and women's teams both came away with victories at Northern Arizona. On the women's side, the No. 21 Devils defeated the Lumberjacks 149-93. In the process, the Devils set three new pool records. Junior Camilla Johansson set the pool standards in the 100- and 200-meter backstroke with times of 1:05.04 and 1:59.09 respectively For Johansson, it was the second straight week she took first in the 200 back. Also setting a new pool record was Alyson Miller, who came in with a time of 2:43.08 in the 100-meter backstroke. In the diving portion junior all-American Katrina Pfeuffer swept the 1- and 3-meter diving events for the third time in the last four meets. Like the women the men's team had a pair of swimmers who would set new pool benchmarks as well. The men had a bit easier go of it than the women, defeating the Lumberjacks 143-74. Senior Juan Beltran set a pool record with a time of 1:04.09 in the 100-meter breastroke. Also setting a record was junior Guillermo DeLeon who came in with a time of 57.05 in the 100-meter backstroke.
MAKING A SPLASH: Junior diver and all-American Katrina Pfeuffer has shown of late why she is worthy of all-America status. In three of ASU's last four meets Pfeuffer has swept both the 1- and 3-meter diving events. In the other meet, she took second in both.
UP NEXT: The women are off until February 14, when they join the men for a home dual meet versus their in-state rival, the Arizona Wildcats. The meet will take place at 1 p.m. at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center on the campus of Arizona State University. The meet will be the final home meets for six members of Arizona State's men's and women's swimming and diving teams.
ASU HOSTING PAC-10 DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS: Arizona State has been chosen as the site for the 1998 Pac-10 Diving Championships. The championships will feature some of the best divers in the nation including Sun Devil Katrina Pfeuffer who is a returning all-America from last year. The Pac-10 Diving Championships will take place February 26-28 at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center on the campus of Arizona State University. Anyone interested in ticket information should call the Sun Devil ticket office at 965-2381.
