ASU Swimmers Head North for Meet Versus In-State Rival Northern Arizona

THIS WEEK: The Arizona State men's and women's swimming and diving teams, ranked 12th and 21st respectively, journey to Flagstaff, Arizona for a January 31 meet versus in-state rival Northern Arizona. Earlier this season, the men's team scored a decisive 123-75 victory versus NAU in Tempe.

LAST WEEK: The Arizona State men's and women's swimming and diving teams found the waters rough in their trips to bay-area, Pac-10 rivals California and Stanford. On Friday, the men's team was edged 124-122 while the women's team was defeated 192-109. Leading the men was freshman Matt Carter who posted a pair of first-place finishes in the 50 free (20.50) and 500 free (4:33.93). In the diving portion, sophomore Allan Sonkin swept the 1- and 3-meter diving events for the Sun Devils. On the women's side, the Devils were only able to come up with a pair -- Casey Murphy (1000 free, 10:07.48) and Camilla Johansson (200 back, 2:00.97) -- of first-place finishes. Junior diver Katrina Pfeuffer continued her consistent winning ways, sweeping the 1- and 3-meter diving events. The following day at Stanford the Devils would fair no better, dropping both matches (men 153-83 and women 202-98) to the top-ranked Cardinal. Leading the Devils on the men's side was junior Francisco Sanchez, who posted a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle (44.18). For the women's team, Murphy took first place in the 500 free (4:55.32) and also was part of the Devils' relay unit (Murphy, Tiffany Houser, Anna Ericson, Carolyn Adel) that took first place in the 400 free relay (3:32.33). In the diving competition, Pfeuffer recorded a pair of second-place finishes in the 1- and 3-meter diving.

UP NEXT: The men's swimming and diving team heads to Utah for a weekend clash with Brigham Young (Feb. 5) and Utah (Feb. 6). The women are off until February 14, when they join the men for a home dual meet versus their other in-state rival, the Arizona Wildcats. The meet will take place at 1 p.m. at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center on the campus of Arizona State University.
