Sun Devil Swimmers Set to Open Season
TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Arizona State University men's and women's swimming & diving teams open their respective 1997-98 seasons with a dual meet against UNLV at 2:30 p.m. at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe.
The women's team returns three All-Americans from last year's squad that finished fifth at the Pac-10s and 28th at the NCAAs. Last season's All-Americans, Carolyn Adel, Casey Murphy and diver Katrina Pfeuffer will once again challenge for national honors. Looking to regain the form that saw them achieve All-American honors two years ago are Erika Sohlen, Tiffany Houser and Sarah Adams. Amanda Clegg placed in the top-15 at the World Short Course Championships over the summer and is expected to vie for national honors this season.
The men's team is coming off an 11th-place finish at the NCAAs and a fifth place finish at the Pac-10s. The leader of this year's team is All-American Francisco Sanchez. Sanchez placed fourth at the NCAAs in the 50 free last year, the same event he won in 1996. Also returning is Craig Hutchison, who along with Sanchez captured All-American honors in the 200/400/800 free relays at the NCAAs.
