Sun Devils Split Swim Opener
TEMPE, Ariz. -- The ASU men's and women's swimming and diving teams split a dual meet this afternoon with UNLV at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. The women's squad cruised to a 183-110 victory, while the men dropped a close 155-140 decision.
The women received victories from Carolyn Adel (200 free), Carrie Anderson (100 & 200 breast), Amanda Clegg (200 fly), Sarah Adams (50 free & 100 free), Casey Murphy (500 free) and Tiffany Houser (100 fly).
The men held a commanding 95-55 lead after seven events, only to learn that the pool was not marked correctly. The pool was not marked for the backstroke events, causing the Sun Devils to forfeit the 400 medley relay and the 100 backstroke. The error changed the score dramatically, giving UNLV the new lead of 76-69. ASU regained the lead temporarily, only to see UNLV win the meet by taking the 100 fly and 400 IM events. Francisco Sanchez was the highlight of the afternoon for ASU, recording the school's third fastest time in the 50 free with a 19.97
On the boards, junior Katrina Pfeuffer won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. Allan Sonkin won the 1-meter event for the men.
The women's swim team will travel to Las Cruces, N.M. to swim against New Mexico State on November 8. The men will be off until November 15, when they will swim against USC at 11 a.m. at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
