Swimming and Diving Falls to Southern California

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State men's and women's swimming and diving squads both fell to Southern California in Los Angeles this weekend. The men lost a 134.5-87.5 decision while the women lost by a count of 178-121.

The men were led by senior all-America Francisco Sanchez who recorded first-place finishes in the 50 free (19.98) and the 100 free (43.71). Others who placed in the top three for the Devils included Matt Carter (second, 9:17.58, 1000 free and third, 4:30.98, 500 free) Robert Delgado and Pablo Abal (second, 20.23, and third, 20.84, respectively in the 50 free) and Christian Jacobson (second, 1:50.06, 200 back).

The women were paced by junior all-America Carolyn Adel who recorded first-place finishes in the 200 free (1:49.41), 100 free (51.29) and 400 IM (4:19.91). Also turning in good performances for the Sun Devils were freshmen Sarah Baham and Riley Mants. Baham recorded a first-place finish in the 200 fly (2:00.42) and a second-place finish in the 100 fly (54.81) while Mants recorded the top spot in the 200 breast (2:17.10) and a third-place finish in the 100 breast (1:04.51). Also recording top-three finishes for the Devils were senior all-America Camilla Johansson (second, 57.61, 100 back and third, 2:02.23, 200 back) and junior co-captain Casey Murphy (third, 1:52.15, 200 free).

The record for the Sun Devil men is now evened at 1-1 while the women move to 2-1-1. The men return to action next week when they head to Lincoln, Neb., for the Nike Sprint Classic (Nov. 20) and the Husker Shootout (Nov. 21-22). The women return to competition next Monday (Nov. 23) when they join the men for a 3 p.m. dual meet against Auburn at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center on the campus of Arizona State University.
