March 19, 1998

TEMPE, Ariz.-- Three Arizona State swimmers -- sophomores Carolyn Adel, Amanda Clegg and Casey Murphy -- each registered career bests today at the first day of competition of the Women's NCAA Championships being held in Minneapolis, Minn.

"It was a good first day of competition for us," says ASU Head Coach Tim Hill. "Our swimmers really came through with great performances today, however, I feel that our best effort is yet to come."

Adel, a returning all-America in the 400 IM, placed 24th in the 200 IM with a 2:02.53, while teammate Clegg finished 34th with a 2:04.33. Murphy, a returning all-America in the 200 free, placed 19th in the 500 free with a career-best 4:48.81.

Competition of the NCAA Championships continues through Saturday.
