SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The 1998 Women's Tennis NCAA Championship bracket was announced Monday and Arizona State will face Mississippi in first=round action Thursday at 10 a.m. PT. The 16-team single-elimination championship is being held at the University of Notre Dame's Courtney Tennis Center in South Bend, Ind.
The selection committee names the first four seeds in the tournament and groups the next 12 teams by four. Florida received the number one seed followed by Stanford, Duke and Georgia. The 5-8 seeds were, in alphabetical order, BYU, California, Mississippi and Texas. ASU was among the 9-12 seeds with UCLA, Wake Forest and William & Mary. The final four seeds were Arkansas, Kansas, Pepperdine and Wake Forest.
If ASU upsets Mississippi on Thursday, it would advance to the quarterfinals against the winner of Duke-Arkansas at 8 a.m. PT on Friday.
ASU is currently the ninth ranked team in the nation and is making its 11th consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships. ASU finished the season with a record of 13-6 overall and an 8-5 mark in the Pac-10.
Four Sun Devils will continue play May 25-29 in the Individual Championships. Reka Cseresnyes and Karin Palme earned invitations to the singles field and the doubles teams of Stephanie Lansdorp/Katy Propstra and Alison nash/Celena McCoury will compete as well.
