WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Led by senior Blair O'Neal who is looking for the first top 10 NCAA finish of her career, the Arizona State women's golf team slipped to 16th Thursday after the third round of the NCAA Championships, being held May 20-23 on the par 72, 6,225-yard Kampen Course of the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex.
The Sun Devils shot a 21-over 309, their best effort of the tournament, on Thursday but dropped six spots to 16th with a three-round total of 76-over 940 (320-311-309). ASU is just one stroke out of the top 15 and 13 strokes out of the top 10, while the team will be looking for its 21st top 15 finish in 22 trips to the NCAA Championships in Friday's final round.
Southern California continues to lead the NCAA Championships for the third consecutive day, shooting a five-over 293 on Thursday for a three-round total of 901. The Women of Troy have a seven-stroke lead over second-place Pepperdine (908), while Oklahoma State (912), Texas (917) and Florida (918) round out the top five.
Individually, O'Neal continues to lead the Sun Devils and is tied for 10th with a three-round total of 11-over 227 (76-75-76). The Tempe native and three-time honorable-mention All-Pac-10 honoree will be looking for the first top 10 NCAA finish of her career in Friday's final round.
Other Sun Devils include senior Gaelle Truet who is tied for 60th at 19-over 235 (80-76-79), while sophomore Erin Tone is tied for 79th with a three-round total of 240 (79-86-75). Senior Melanie Hunt (85-82-83) and true freshman Alissa Kuczka (93-78-79) are each tied for 115th with three-day totals of 250.
USC's Mikaela Parmlid and Florida's Andrea Vander Lende are tied for first in the hunt for the NCAA individual championships with three-round totals of four-over 220.
The NCAA Championships wrap up Friday with the final round getting underway at 8 a.m. Central Time. As the 16th-place team, Arizona State will tee off at 9 a.m. Central (7 a.m. Arizona Time) from hole No. 10.
