TEMPE – The Arizona State University track and field team will have a a small contingent in Walnut, Calif., this weekend taking part in the 55th Annual Mt. SAC Relays over the next couple days.
The Sun Devil roster this weekend will consist of members of the distance team as well as the pole vaulters.
Shelby Houlihan will compete for the No. 8 Sun Devils in the 800-meter run. Currently ranked No. 1 in the nation at 1,500 meters, the sophomore will be looking to improve upon her current national seventh-place standing in the half mile this season. No other athlete in the nation is currently ranked in the top-10 in both events this year.
Sophomore Shaina Corbin will be making her steeplechase debut this weekend while freshman Adriana Olivas will be making her collegiate track and field debut in a Sun Devil uniform at 5,000 meters along side teammate Hailey Hanna.
The men will see Darius Terry and Nick Happe both return to action in the 1,500-meter run with Happe coming in with the nation’s fifth-best time in the event while Terry is sitting just outside the top 10.
Redshirt freshman Ryan Herson will look to crack ASU’s time 10 in the 5,000-meter run alongside senior Brian Pierre.
ASU’s host of pole vaulters will also be in action, including two-time All-American Derick Hinch.
Additionally the Mt SAC Relays will be honoring the 50th Anniversary of ASU’s world-record setting Mile Relay performance in 1963. The team that consisted of Ulis Williams, Henry Carr, Ron Freeman and Mike Barrick clocked a time of 3:04.5 that stoof as the world record until 1966.
The team has since been enshrined in the ASU Hall of Fame and the Mt. SAC Relays Hall of Fame and all four members are expected to be in attendance at the competition this weekend.
