Sun Devil Softball Announces Field Trip Day

March 21, 2006

Tempe, Ariz - and Sun Devil Softball are proud to announce a community outreach initiative designed to expose elementary aged children to a university campus and intercollegiate athletics.

On Friday, March 24, 2006, the Sun Devil Softball team faces UNLV, for the first-ever Softball Field Trip Day.  First pitch is at 11:00 a.m. and invitations to the game were sent to elementary schools throughout the school district.  Over 800 fourth, fifth and sixth grade students are participating in this event.

"We wanted to find a fun way to bring kids to campus and create a memorable experience for them", says ASU Softball Coach Clint Myers.

The students will arrive at the morning of March 24 and will tour the campus while making their way to Farrington Stadium.  Upon their arrival each of the students will be given a copy of the 2006 Sun Devil Softball Academic Workbook.  The workbook lessons will be completed during the game in between innings and in the classroom upon their arrival back to school.

"For many of these kids, this will be the first time they'll step foot on a college campus", Myers says.  "We want to make sure that they come back, both to cheer us on and to go to school when the time comes".

Friday's event will give these students exposure to , the Athletics Department, and NCAA Division-I Softball.  At the completion of the game all ASU and UNLV softball student-athletes will interact with the elementary students on the importance of school.

Tickets for Friday's game are still available to the general public for $5 and can be purchased on the day of the game at the box office at Farrington Stadium.  For more information regarding tickets call 480-727-0105.
