Drowning is the fifth leading cause of unintentional injury deaths across all age groups in the United States (US), with approximately 10 people dying each day from a preventable drowning incident. The figures for children are even worse: drowning is the leading cause of (non-medical) death for children aged 1-4 years of age in the US, with the vast majority of these deaths occurring in backyard pools and spas. Drowning is the second leading cause of (non-medical) deaths for children aged 1-14 years of age (African American children in this age group are 5.5 times more likely to die from drowning than Caucasian children). For every one of these deaths another five children experience non-fatal submersion that requires emergency medical interventions, and potential long-term physical and mental disabilities due to cerebral hypoxia.
