SUN DEVIL FOOTBALL POSTGAME NOTES - WASHINGTON
 
THE ASU VICTORY...

• Is ASU’s 17th win over a ranked opponent since 2012 - notable as the Sun Devils won just 15 total from 1998-2011. The 17 wins over ranked teams are 19th in the FBS since 2012.
• Makes Sun Devil interim head coach Shaun Aguano one of only two coaches in program history to earn their first win at ASU against a ranked opponent, joining Darryl Rogers (ASU defeated #9 Houston, 29-13, in the 1980 season opener in Rogers’ first game at the helm).
• Improves the Sun Devils to 7-4 since 2013 following a loss to a ranked opponent in the team’s next game against a ranked opponent (not necessarily in successive weekends). 

SERIES VS. WASHINGTON

• Arizona State now leads the all-time series with Washington 22-16.
• The Huskies have not defeated the Sun Devils in a game at Sun Devil Stadium since 2001, giving ASU eight straight wins in Tempe.
• Arizona State is now 15-2 in their last 17 games against the Huskies.
• Over the past two matchups in the series, ASU has combined to scored 80 points, the most since back-to-back Sun Devil victories in 2007 & 2008 (83 points).

QUICK HITS

• Washington came into the game 10/13 on fourth down conversions this season.
• Arizona State held them to just 1/4 on fourth downs, including a huge fourth down stop to get the ball in Huskies territory in the third quarter. ASU then cashed in with a touchdown on the ensuing drive, changing the momentum of the game.
• No team had scored on their first drive of the game against Washington. That changed when Carter Brown made a 53-yard field goal after a 12-play, 40 yard drive to start the game.
• The Sun Devils forced Washington into a turnover on downs to begin the second half, marking the first time they haven’t scored on their first possession of the second half.
• The Sun Devils have an interception in eight straight games dating back to last season and 13 of the last 14 games. ASU has 53 interceptions since 2018.
• Washington had only had four three-and-outs all season, but ASU forced two today.
• Arizona State scored 21 points in the second quarter, the second time they have reached that mark in a quarter this season (NAU 2nd quarter). 

DOWNING THE DAWGS

• The 45 points scored by the Sun Devils are the most scored on Washington since a 59-52 victory over Eastern Washington on Sep. 6, 2014.
• The last time Washington scored this many points (38 or more) in a loss was a 67-56 defeat to Baylor on Dec. 29, 2011.
• Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. had thrown at least two touchdowns in every game this season. Arizona State kept him from throwing a touchdown, with a Jordan Clark pick-six representing the only touchdown from a Penix Jr. pass.
  • Penix Jr. came into the game having thrown only three interceptions on 191 attempts, compared to 16 touchdown passes. He could not find that same success against the Sun Devil defense, unable to find the endzone with a single pass while throwing only his fourth interception of the season.

TB16

• Trenton Bourguet became the first Sun Devil quarterback to come off the bench in a game to lead ASU to a come-from-behind victory since Brock Osweiler against UCLA in 2010 (ASU was down 10-3 when Bourguet entered today and 10-0 against UCLA in 2010.
• Bourguet threw three touchdown passes, the most for a quarterback coming off the bench since Osweiler threw for four in that UCLA contest.
• The Arizona native finished the day with 183 yards and three touchdowns on 15-of-21 passing. He was 5-of-7 for 81 yards and a touchdown on third down for the day. 

PICK SIX PARTY

• Jordan Clark came through with a massive interception in the second quarter, catching a pass that was deflected at the line of scrimmage by Nesta Jade Silvera.
• He then returned it 38 yards for a touchdown, the first pick-six since Jack Jones took one back 87 yards in the Territorial Cup victory over Arizona last year.
• ASU registers an interception return for a touchdown for the second straight year against Washington, as Merlin Robertson sealed the 2021 victory with a fourth quarter pick six in last season’s matchup. 

MONEY DOWN

• Arizona State finished 9/13 (69.2%) on third downs, one of their best efforts in recent memory on the most important down of the game.
• The nine first downs are the most in a game since the Sun Devils went 11/15 (73%) in the 42-30 victory over Arizona on 11/25/17. That was also the last time ASU converted at a clip of 69% or higher.
• Over the last two weeks, ASU has had 16 third down conversions total. In the first four games of the season, they only converted 12 total. 
  • To take it a step further, ASU is 16-25 (64%) in the past two games on third down, compared to 12-44 (27.3 %) in the first four games. 

WHAT CAN BROWN DO FOR YOU

• Carter Brown’s 53-yard field goal (3:57 left in 1Q) was the sixth-longest field goal in ASU history. It is also a career-high, surpassing his previous mark of 48 vs. NAU on Sept. 1st, 2022.
• It is the third-longest field goal by a Sun Devil at Sun Devil Stadium since 1982, and the longest field goal since 2016.
• It was the longest field goal made by a true freshman in ASU history. He ties Thomas Weber (2007) for the longest by any freshman, as Weber was a redshirt freshman when he made a 53-yarder.
• Tied for the longest field goal made by a Pac-12 kicker this season (Stanford K Joshua Karty, Oct. 1 vs Oregon).
• He is now 9/10 on field goals and has made all 18 of his extra points this season, accounting for a team-high 45 points.

THROW UP THE X:

• X Valladay was tremendous yet again and played a major role in the victory.
• He eclipsed 100 yards rushing for the fourth time as a Sun Devil and for the 18th time in his career.
• X Valladay’s 11-yard touchdown run gives him six touchdowns in six games, tying his career high in rushing touchdowns in a single season. 
• The 14-yard touchdown reception was Valladay’s second receiving touchdown of the season which ties his career high in receiving touchdowns, but the first time he’s had back-to-back games with a receiving touchdown in his career. 
• He has now accounted for 10 touchdowns in the last 11 games he’s played in dating back to last season and 14 touchdowns in the last 19 games dating back to the start of the 2021 season.
• This is the second straight game where he has caught and ran for a touchdown. He becomes the first running back in the FBS to rush and catch a touchdown in back-to-back games this season.
• The 111-yard performance gives him 

HEART AND SOELLE

• Kyle Soelle finished with 12 tackles, giving him 10+ tackles in five straight games. That is the longest streak since Christian Sam did it in seven straight games in 2017.
• In that five game span, Soelle has 68 tackles. Since at least 2000, no other ASU player has more tackles in five consecutive games.
• He now has 73 tackles on the season and 222 in his career. 

MILESTONE WATCH

• Bryan Thompson had 78 yards to go over 1,000 for his career (currently at 1,072).
• 153 rushing yards for X Valladay to reach 4,000 for his career (currently at 3,847).
• 20 tackles for Merlin Robertson to reach 300 in his career (currently at 280).
