ASU is 2-8 vs. the No. 1 team in the nation. The wins have come on Dec. 22, 2018, vs. Kansas in Tempe and on March 7, 1981, at Oregon State.
On Dec. 22, 2018, ASU trailed by eight at the half (39-31) and 74-67 with 4:31 left but outscored Kansas 13-2 down the stretch led by Rob Edwards, who had 15 points, all but two in the second half, as ASU topped No. 1 Kansas 80-76. ASU forced three missed shots and three turnovers in the final four minutes, but also placed five players in double digits. Zylan Cheatham (11 rebounds) and Lu Dort added 13 points each while Romello White had 11 points and Remy Martin had 10 and four assists. The Sun Devils shot .531 (17-of-32) in the second half and held KU to 11-of-28 (.393). ASU's bench outscored KU's bench 26-5 and ASU also grabbed 14 offensive rebounds leading to 11 second chance points.
In one of the the greatest road wins in Pac-12 history. ASU, coached by 2003 Pac-10 Hall of Honor inductee Ned Wulk, travelled to Corvallis and led 40-20 at the half against top-ranked and undefeated Oregon State. It won 87-67 on the final day of the regular season. All five ASU starters (Sam Williams, Paul Williams, Alton Lister, Byron Scott and Fat Lever) in that game were future NBA first- or second-round draft picks.
A look at ASU vs. No. 1, and note that all the games were on the road but two.
