Sun Bowl Post Game Notes – Florida State

Arizona State 20, Florida State 14| Game Notes

(December 31, 2019)

THE ASU VICTORY...

  • Is ASU's first bowl victory since the 2014 Sun Bowl win over Duke.

  • Improves the Sun Devils to 15-16-1 all-time in bowl games.

  • Represents ASU's first three-game win streak to end a season since 2012 and is just the third time since joining the Pac-12 that the Sun Devils have accomplished the feat.

  • Gives ASU's its first season with at least eight victories since 2014.

  • Improves Arizona State to 4-2-1 all-time in the Sun Bowl.

  • Is the first over Florida State since the 1971 Fiesta Bowl.

SUN BOWL HARDWARE

  • Quarterback Jayden Daniels was named MVP of the Sun Bowl

  • Placekicker Cristian Zendejas earned Special Teams MVP honors of the Sun Bowl.

QUICK HITS

  • The Arizona State defense managed to force a season-high six turnovers (4 INT, 2 FR), giving them three or more takeaways for the fourth time this season.

    • It was the first game the Seminoles had turned the ball over six times since September 12, 1998 against NC State.

  • Cristian Zendejas tied a Sun Bowl record and matched a career-high with four made field goals, matching Washington State’s Drew Dunning in the 2001 edition.

  • Chase Lucas’ field goal block in the first quarter was the first by a Sun Devil since Paul Crawford blocked a Washington field goal on Oct. 25, 2014.

    • It was the first blocked field goal allowed by Florida State since Nov. 11, 2018 (vs. Boston College).

  • ASU shutout the Seminoles in the first half, the fourth time they have done that this season (first since at MSU, 9/14/19).

  • By picking off four passes, the Sun Devil defense has recorded nine interceptions over the past three games.

    • The four interceptions are the most by ASU since a road victory over Utah (Oct. 21, 2017).

ELITE COMPANY

  • Jayden Daniels moved into 11th in ASU single-season history, finishing the 2019 season with 2,943 passing yards

  • Jayden Daniels finished the season with only two interceptions on 338 passing attempts, setting the school record for fewest interceptions in a season with over 300 attempts.

    • Daniels has not thrown an interception in 157 consecutive pass attempts, setting the ASU school record in the category.

  • With a first quarter catch, Kyle Williams moves into a tie for third in ASU history recording a catch in 41 straight games (tied with new Assistant Coach Derek Hagan)

LOCKING IT DOWN

  • ASU shutout the Seminoles in the first half, the fourth time they have done that this season (first since at MSU, 9/14/19).

    • It is only the second time that Florida State has been shutout at the half all season, with national finalist Clemson representing the only other defense to accomplish the feat.

    • A big reason for the shutout was the third down defense, as FSU was 0-for-7 on third down in the first half.

  • Arizona State also held Florida State scoreless in the first quarter, the sixth occasion they have accomplished the feat.

ZEN-DE-BOSS

  • With his 40-yard field goal in the first quarter, placekicker Cristian Zendejas became just the fifth different Sun Devil to make 20+ field goals in a season (joins his father, Luis Zendejas on the list).

  • The four field goals made gives him 23 on the season, moving into a tie for sixth in single-season school history.

    • He made at least three field goals without a miss for the third consecutive game and the fifth time this season.
