Javonie Small joined Arizona State in September 2017 as the recruiting coordinator and assistant coach to the sprinters and hurdlers and has helped reel in some of the most prolific Sun Devil sprinters in recent memory. Small orchestrated the commitments of running phenoms including two-time Pan American U20 champion Justin Robinson and two-time All-American Jamar Marshall Jr, along with six-time All-American Cortney Jones, All-American Kentre Patterson, U.S. U20 4x100 world champion Austin Kratz, and six time All-Conference honoree Josephine Anokye.

With Small’s oversight, Marshall Jr. had a head-turning first season where the Stockton, California, native shattered ASU’s indoor 60H (7.59) and outdoor 110H (13.49) records en route to claiming the Pac-12 110H title and finishing fifth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Patterson was right next to Marshall Jr., running 7.66 in the 60H to sit second all-time and recording a 13.56 in the 110H for third all-time. Both sprinters then qualified for spots at the USATF Olympic Trials.

Small worked closely with Josephine Anokye whose name appears four times in the Sun Devil all-time record books, her best marks being second all-time in the 60m dash (7.38) and third in the 200m dash (23.00).

Prior to Arizona State, Small spent four years in Athens, Georgia, as a volunteer assistant and director of operations under Petros Kyprianou during a time of unprecedented success at UGA. His athletes included American triple jump record-holder and Olympian Ketura Orji and Olympic heptathlete Kendall Williams.

Both women mastered their respective fields while at Georgia. Williams was a seven-time NCAA champion, and Orji won five NCAA titles and two gold medals at the U.S. Outdoor Championships.

Prior to his time in the NCAA, Small spent several years as a coach in the youth and high school ranks in the state of Georgia and maintains many connections in the area.

Small earned his degree in sociology from the prestigious Morehouse College in Atlanta where he was an outstanding sprinter on the Maroon Tigers. A six-time All-American across four events, Small brought home 400H All-American honors twice, 110H honors twice, and earned the status once in both the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays. He also collected eight SIAC titles.

The former Texas high school state champion in the 110 hurdles also competed at the U.S. Championships in 2006 and 2007. He advanced to the semifinal of the 400-meter hurdles at the championships in 2006 and finished 15th overall.

Small made the move to Tempe with his wife, Sherena. She is a Portland, Oregon, native and was a triple jumper at the University of Nevada – Reno.
