Mandy comes back to the 2011 team looking to build on the success of her stellar three year career, which has seen her battle off injuries to still remain one of the most talented defensive first basemen in the game and potent bat. In 2010, Urfer hit a scalding .360, third best average on the team with 21 runs scored, six doubles, a triple and seven home runs all while battling off a stress fracture in her foot. In 2009, she hit.260 on the year with 18 runs scored, with three doubles and eight home runs on the season. Her eight home runs were good for fourth a roster filled with power. A run generator, Mandy drove in 25 runs on the season while putting together a .630 slugging percentage. Her lightning-quick reflexes and footwork at first base also make her a huge defensive corner for the Sun Devils as she posted a .987 fielding percentage last season which she looks to improve on in 2010 as she'll compete for starting time again at first.
While only able to play for about half the season in 2008, Urfer came in to hit .254 at the plate with eight runs scored and 12 RBIs, including the winning double against Alabama in the opening round of the 2008 WCWS. Finally getting her swing back by the end of the season, Urfer also launched two home runs while taking to the field to assume duties at first base where she posted a stellar .993 average with her quick reflexes and arm.
Mandy joined the Devils with an arsenal of weapons to use. A solid first and third baseman who can also hold her own in the pitching circle when necessary, Urfer does most of her damage at the plate with her strength and bat speed. A letterwinner in softball and volleyball at Orange Lutheran in Orange County, Calif., Urfer captained her softball squad for two years where she was named MVP her junior and senior year, First-Team All-League all four years and Second-Team All-State her senior year. She also played for various club teams including the Raiders, Batbusters and Explosion. A solid student as well, Mandy was a member of the National Honor Society as well.
While currently an exploratory major, Mandy was born on March 5, 1989 in Orange County to Wayne (contractor) and Susan (mortgage business) Urfer. She has two siblings, Kyle (23) and Megan (21). Her full name is Mandy Elizabeth Urfer.
